Paige HemmisThe countdown is on!

Not only for the Blizzard of 2009, but for the two-hour Extreme Makeover: Home Edition special this Sunday on WJET of the home built here in Erie for Clara Ward, by Maleno Development, hundreds of Erie volunteers and of course, Ty Pennington, Paige Hemmis and the Design Team.

The promo for the premiere is up on ABC’s website. Unfortunately, it won’t embed, but here’s the link:

WJET: Erie Extreme Makeover will air on December 13th

After a couple false positives, we have it official: the Erie build of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will air on Sunday, December 13th on ABC television. The release by WJET/Erie on YourErie.com:

“Finally…Erie’s time to shine in prime time has finally arrived!”

That was the reaction of JET-TV’s GM/VP Tim Dunst to word that ABC has confirmed the Erie edition of Extreme Makeover Home Edition will air on Sunday December 13, 8pm-10pm, on JET-TV.

JET-TV also announced that it will air a one-hour special called “The Making of Erie’s Extreme Makeover” beginning at 7pm. According to Dunst, “JET-TV had exclusive access to the Erie building project and to many of the people involved in the project including Extreme Makeover Designer Paul DiMeo .”

In late June and early July, the Extreme Makeover team from ABC was in Erie to build a new home for Clara Ward on E 21st St. Hundreds of volunteers joined Maleno Builders and other contractors to help make the project a reality. Dunst added, ” This two hour special on Clara Ward will be a fabulous show. It’s a tribute to Ward, her family, and the people in Erie who came together to make it happen.”

The two-hour special indicates the strength of Clara’s story and the drama of the week, with the crash of the concrete footers off of the truck on Buffalo Road, along with the rain. Can’t wait!

Extreme Makeover: Erie misses season premiere slot

Wards react to the reveal

Clara Ward’s story won’t mark the launch of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition season premiere.

Instead it will be the build for the Huber family of Wisconsin, which took place over a month later than the Erie build that will be featured on the two-part Season 7 opener on Sunday, September 27th. From a news release:

“Huber Family,” Parts 1 & 2 — On August 3, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” traveled to South Range, WI, to tell Howard Huber, a hero firefighter and his service minded wife, Jessica, that they will have a newly rebuilt home in seven days. Two-time Emmy Award-winning actress Patricia Heaton is the celebrity volunteer for this episode – meeting the family, helping on the build — and the music group Five for Fighting (new single “Chances,” “Superman,” “100 Years”) will perform. The two-part Season Premiere episode airs SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 (7:00-8:00 & 8:00–9:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

When Howie and Jessica met, they each felt they’d found a true partner, someone who valued hard work and community involvement. They bought a dilapidated farmhouse, figuring that Howie could fix it up within a few years, as he’d formerly worked in construction. Although they were struggling financially, Jessica, a nursing student, encouraged Howie to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. Through long hours of hard work, and with as many as five jobs between them, the Hubers were able to both pay off their debt and see Howie established as the most popular and most decorated firefighter in town. In the meantime, both Hubers did everything they could to repair the old house that was the only home they could afford. Unfortunately, they now know that it is far beyond their ability to repair: The two story farmhouse has a chimney separating from house, improperly installed windows, severe water damage throughout, and the electrical, heat and sewage systems are unsafe. Every time Howie goes to work, he fears that the next 911 call he gets might be about his own home. Now it’s up to Ty and the gang to allay Howie’s fears and fulfill his wish to have a home that’s safe for their children.

Ok, so it may not be the first show, but by the looks of this promo, the Erie build should be hitting soon (Clara and her family are all over this piece).

First Press and Tower Post-Sept. 2008

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the launch of this web community devoted to Erie media. Over these last twelve months, through 271 posts, 1,803 approved comments in 12 categories ranging from traditional to new media, we covered the few highs and many lows of a devastating year for local and national media.

First the high notes. This community is a bountifully generous one, and the story that generated the most reaction of a positive nature was our coverage of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build of a home for East Erie resident Clara Ward. Our daily posts, live blog, video, and audio podcasts gave P&T readers an inside view of what it takes to not only build a 3500 square foot home in less than seven days, but to also shoot a one or two hour network reality television show in the process.

Extreme Makeover-Erie Braveheart Rush

UPDATE: Spectators can now park at Bayfront and State Streets by the Erie Maritime Museum. An EMTA shuttle will be available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to take spectators to the site to watch the build. Spectators may take canned goods and books for the “Reed and Feed” drive on the shuttle and drop them off at the site.

Demolition of Clara Ward’s east Erie home by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was slated for midday on Saturday. In preparation is what’s called the Braveheart Rush, and for the first time, the rush was led by dozens of children, many of whom have benefited from Clara’s ministry to the neighborhood kids.

Here’s some quick pictures behind the scenes from this morning, along with a YouTube video of Steadicam Operator Bob Berg, who excelled in his craft in the middle of an onslaught of excited children led by Ty Pennington.

A podcast of interviews with volunteers and Erie media will be coming tomorrow. Spectators are welcome at the site after the demolition is completed this afternoon until 8 PM, then 8 to 8 daily.

Sometime Thursday morning, Ty Pennington will grab the noticeably low-tech bullhorn to rouse an Erie family and tell them that their lives would be changed forever. The deserving family will be sent on a amazing vacation while Ty and his crew build the family a new home in seven days.

Here are the latest details:

  • The family will be revealed to the public about noon Thursday, and interviews with the family will appear on the Thursday evening news. Sometime after 4 PM the family will embark on their vacation
  • Friday will be a construction setup day
  • Saturday demo occurs
  • Sunday the house framing and construction begins
  • All slots for volunteers are long taken, however Grace Church in McKean is looking for help for the accompanying neighborhood side projects that will be happening. Some $20,000 in cash will be needed and you can donate by clicking here
  • Donations for the build, as well as for the Maleno Family-to-Family fund are also needed

You can follow the project’s progress at www.malenoextremehome.com. We will update you later Thursday on this post as the family’s name is released.
