Poll: did media overhype Irene?

Right after the GoErie.com paywall went up we asked our Press and Tower readers if they would be willing to pay for site access. Close to 75% of respondents, including non-subscribers and partial week delivery subscribers said that they would not be willing to pay even $2.95 for monthly access to the portal. We will see how this changes in a few months.

Hurricane Irene is history and now the Monday Morning Quarterbacking has commenced. Some in the media, with their defensive thin skins clearly showing, are asking whether there was too much hype around the storm, and will it hurt next time if people don’t heed the warnings about a more ferocious tropical storm.

Can you over-hype a named hurricane in the post-Katrina era?

Did the media overhype its coverage of Hurricane Irene?

  • No...based on the path and intensity they gave appropriate warning (59%, 16 Votes)
  • Yes...it was much ado about little (41%, 11 Votes)
  • I don't know...I'm ambivalent (0%, 0 Votes)

The Instant Ted Williams Story

In a “near” exclusive…we have from the Dave and Jimmy show the Instant Ted Williams Story. It shows in a minute-55 how one homeless man with a great voice went from an I-71 interchange to the couch on the TODAY show in a matter of hours.

Thanks to Dave and Jimmy for this:

Lauer learns that North East is in NW PA

TODAY Show’s Matt Lauer isn’t the first person to be confused by the location of Erie County town, North East, PA. But check out the little smirk on his face as Mike Seidel sends his last morning show report from last week’s winter blast in our area back to the studio.

Deep Background for October 3 – 9, 2010

If you think nobody watches local TV, you could have fooled me!

By the chatter on the P&T comments on the whereabouts of 12 News Today’s Kara Coleman and Mark Soliday, you would have sworn that the PSP had an all-points bulletin out for the anchors. Instead Kara and Mark were on a pre-November sweeps junket to 30 Rock for a promo shoot with the TODAY show stars. Glad we found them!

Deep Background for September 19-25, 2010

Sometimes in media, it’s the little things.

Yes, often it’s the big things, like the multi-page investigative report or the big fundraising remote. But for a moment let me celebrate the little things, those nuanced benefits media folks give us to enhance our reading,  viewing or listening experience and that show they went to the extra effort 0n your behalf.

This week, WICU-TV added a ticker to the bottom graphic box on the Today Show. I had seen this in Dallas when I was there recently and thought it would be nice to have the local time and temp and local news headlines on the Erie version of the show. I didn’t think they could do it since there is no local HDTV origination out the Erie studios. But whether they have an HD graphics generator downstream from the network HD passthrough, or however they are doing it, WICU now has the Today Show ticker…and it is nice to have.

It’s always nice to hear from the users of this blog community. Please leave a comment below on all things media, or you can e-mail me, or tweet @pressandtower.

Crunch time for Kanzius/Pepsi fundraiser

Although I’ve never experienced it, they say that there is some kind of runners euphoria in the final miles of a marathon.

That endorphin rush is being experienced right now by the supporters of the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, as they attempt to cross the finish line in 1st place and win $250,000 from the Pepsi Refresh project. With just four full days to go at this writing, the cause has jumped from 17th in the first week to number one over the weekend, and it’s supporters are going full-throttle to keep it there.

A massive social and new media effort very early on became a constant on traditional media, and if I’m Pepsi, I’m thinking that this little expenditure of $1.3 million each month is worth far more than exploding fireworks and Michael Jackson (RIP) singing Pepsi lyrics to the tune of “Billie Jean.”

  • No news for you: these are salad days for television stations in swing states, with plenty of demand for political time 2 ½ weeks before the election. It appears that the demand for commercial time has trumped programming priorities at WICU. Over the past several mornings, instead of the typical local news cut-in during the Today show at 7:25, viewers were fed 6 minutes of non-stop spots, nearly all political. Meanwhile WJET and WSEE ran at least minimal local news and weather breaks as part of their morning shows. A request for an explanation from Ch. 12 went unanswered. I’m sorry, but I just can’t imagine the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, or Harrisburg preempting their traditional Today show newsbreak for nothing but spots no matter how lucrative…this is just “bush league.” (more…)
