All ears tune to WERG to follow Lady Knights

WERG mic flag

90.5 WERG, the Gannon University FM and internet station, will be the center of attention as they provide the coverage of the opening rounds of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball tournament, Atlantic Division.

The Number One ranked Lady Knights host No. 8 Fairmont State at 6:00 PM tonight to begin the Atlantic Regional. If they win, they’ll play the winner of tonight’s nightcap between Seton Hill and Fayetteville State tomorrow night.

Veteran sportscaster and Gannon alum Steve Bohen provides the play-by play, with help from WERG student Sports Director Caitie Ryan. If Cleve Wright’s Golden Knights continue to the semi’s, the broadcast crew will be Bohen and Beth Gaertner, the station’s Promotion Director.

Faculty Operations Director Chet LaPrice is tickled pink to have his live stream and student broadcasters in the spotlight. “We are just thrilled for the women’s basketball team. It is truly a historical moment for Gannon and we are just glad to be along for the ride.”

LaPrice said that the WERG team was especially excited to be able to bring this unprecedented event to Gannon alumni via their webcast, available at wergfm.com, along with the strong signal of 90.5.

Good luck to all of the Gannon community!

Happy Thanksgiving, Erie Media!

At some times in the past 12 months, these pixels have fraught with negativity. I for one am tired of the gloom and doom, so for a least a moment, lets turn our thoughts to what we can be thankful for from the local media that we produce and consume.

So follow me as I count my blessings in my Erie media Thanksgiving list:

  • I’m thankful for the late John Kanzius, who even as his body deteriorated in his final months, engaged his spirit and drive to ensure that the important work of research surrounding his amazing RF machine to fight cancer would continue on.
  • I’m thankful for Dwight Miller and WQLN, who in the face of devastating budget cuts has continued to maintain a strong programming schedule on the public broadcasting stations, including keeping my radio favorite, Marketplace.
  • I’m thankful for the Dave and Jimmy show, and the mighty Dave Kaelin himself, who is the first direct advertiser on Press and Tower. Wanna join him?

The new voice of the Erie Otters

Long time Erie Otters hockey broadcaster Mark Jeanneret, who heads for Portland to broadcast for the AHL Pirates, has been replaced, according to staff reports in Tuesday’s Erie Times-News.

Otters Paul Roper

Paul Roper will become the broadcaster and media relations manager for Erie’s Ontario Hockey League team, coming in from the Trenton Devils of the ECHL. The 24-year old Roper graduated last year from Seton Hall University, where he was the voice of men’s and women’s basketball. Other credentials include broadcasting baseball for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League.

The Otters kickoff their regular season schedule on Sept. 18th at Sudbury.

Behind the Scenes: Erie Seawolves’ Greg Gania

Our special treat this weekend is a look inside the radio and behind the scenes at what it takes to present the play-by-play broadcasts of the Erie Seawolves. I followed Director of Media Relations and Team Broadcaster Greg Gania around before, during and after a Monday night “Buck Night” in July with my camera.

The frenetic preparation on a big home game pays off for the listening fan. I think you’ll agree.

Poll: How do you line up with Pat Howard’s views?

Based on our poll last week, a plurality of P&T readers get their sports fix most often from online sites and blogs, with cable sports running a close second. Local radio and TV sportscasts tied for third place.

This week we get a little political. It is without question that Pat Howard, Managing Editor of the Erie Times-News is the most pervasive editorial voice of the Erie traditional media. How do his values line up with yours?

  • I don’t read him/I’m ambivalent (27%, 11 Votes)
