Bremner’s blog booted

In a moment of very strange timing, the longest long-term blogger of them all, WSEE’s Scott Bremner has entered his last post for GoErie.com.

This comes just a day after I highlighted Scott’s blog for my weekly ErieBlogs Post-of-the-Week on the ErieBlogs.com site. Here’s a clip of what Scott said on Wednesday on his post, “This Week is Goodbye”:

As close as we can figure it, this is the 578th weekly column written for this space, a span that began with a handshake in November of 1998 and has continued uninterrupted for more than 11 years on GoErie until this week.

This week is goodbye.

Call it what you will; a “couldn’t come to terms” or an “inability to reach consensus” or an “agreement to move in different directions.”

It doesn’t matter.

What’s important is that sometimes the greatest journeys don’t begin with the first step but rather with a swift kick in the pants, and that’s what gets the first step going.

There are currently 18 other bloggers on the GoErie site, most of them current Times News staff members, but in 1998 few were willing to write original material in a little known corner of the Internet.

That’s what led to the almost unheard of relationship of a TV guy writing directly to a newspaper website, especially one where the author had the freedom to write op-ed pieces virtually unfettered.

Scott’s “web column” (we didn’t have the word ‘blogger’ back when he started) has been recognized with awards, including being named Best in the Nation by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists in 2000.

Bremner says that he is bound to show up again somewhere on the ‘Net. We’ll be watching.

WSEE’s 12th & Peach studios shuttered

The end of an era.

After 55 years of continual broadcasting from a building that one housed a hairdressing academy and bingo hall, WSEE is moving to 35th & State as it merges with WICU. Scott Bremner and Jacqueline Policastro aired the final Newswatch from the studio last night at 11:00.

There will be no newscasts from WSEE Friday and over the weekend, but Scott did say that they would have a local cast at 6:00 PM on Monday.

On the staff front, NABET representative Eric Seggi doesn’t expect to have a complete roster of who is being retained by WICU and who is gone until Monday. Meanwhile, as we have been reporting, all off-camera, and several former on-camera talent are now seeking jobs. They include morning anchor and producer Raychel Vendetti, along with reporters Jennifer Mobilia, and Charles Santini.

On Thursday’s last Morning’s Live, Raychel indicated that Ray Petelin would be back Monday, albeit without her. Sources say that Stephanie Schelkun is the leading candidate for the morning show and the Nooner. Meanwhile all indications are that Policastro and Bremner will be anchoring the 7 & 11 PM shows, although on Monday, there will be a 6:00 cast, which will probably be taped.

Finally, we want to remember that as we are sorting out all of the news and trying to figure out management’s next move, we are feeling a great deal of empathy for those now looking for employment. Our hearts and well-wishes go out to all of the unsung heroes that have served that station and our community; some for decades.

Thank you for your efforts and energy to make our city and our media community a better place.

Poll: do you do internet radio?

In a straight comparison of the three Erie TV stations engagement of new social media, 62% of poll respondents said that WSEE was the best user of Facebook, Twitter, blogging and the like. It makes sense, considering that Scott Bremner’s Under The Hat was Erie’s first blog from a media personality, beginning in 1998, long before the term “blog” was common.

Last week American Media Services released a survey showing that internet-only radio stations were gaining fast acceptance, even while terrestial radio was holding its own. A third of those under 50 have tried internet-only radio. The impact of online radio will only greatly increase upon the release of internet browsers in vehicles.

What are your online radio listening habits?

Do you listen to internet radio?

  • It has been over a month since I've listened to any radio online (25%, 8 Votes)

DTV: the antenna’s the thing

We now have two weeks under our belts since the original digital television deadline, and the switch by WSEE from analog to full-power DTV. So how is it going?

According to Scott Bremner, it sounds like the phones are ringing pretty regularly:

Given that over-the-air viewers are a relatively small part of total viewership, I would have to say that we have been getting a good amount of calls about not getting the new signal OTA (over-the-air). Far and away the vast majority of calls come down to having the right antenna and pointing it in the right direction. Many people simply hook up the equipment, turn everything on and then call us when they don’t receive our picture. Many seem unwilling to put in the time and effort to buy additional wire, move the antenna around the house and be sure to be pointed toward upper Peach Street where all of the towers can be hit. Our engineers tell them a rooftop antenna is the best set up but of course many are unable to do that. We have gotten some positive feedback that after tweaking the antenna for a while some viewers are now getting all of the full power stations from the various towers. But there is a fair amount of frustration, especially among older viewers.

It seems that many of the forecasts that stemmed from the Wilmington NC market early transition are coming true here. A decent antenna tuned correctly is the key to digital reception.

As much as the date change to June 12th was frustrating to most, it appears that this kind of “rolling switchover” of some stations switching before others is allowing those who just refused to deal with getting a box or antenna are now prompted to do what’s necessary to continue to watch TV in Erie.

  • Kanzius telethon update: The unprecedented multiple channel live broadcast generated a nearly unprecedented generous response. According to WSEE’s Scott Bremner, the Lilly Broadcasting stations WICU, WSEE and the CW raised well over $100,000 Tuesday evening during their Community for Kanzius event. Realizing the critical timing and extreme need for research funds, The Press and Tower has put a permanent link to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation where you can make a donation at any time. Lilly goes ‘all in’ to raise funds for Kanzius Foundation

When Lesley Stahl and 60 Minutes came to Erie, it was a turning point.

Stahl and her production team were covering what she later described as “one of my lifetime favorite stories” on the “The Kanzius Machine,” the RF-based cancer treatment that retired Erie broadcaster John Kanzius has invented and is currently in early trials. When Ms. Stahl and Mr. Kanzius were visiting CBS-affiliate WSEE, News Director Scott Bremner introduced Kanzius to Channel 35 owner Brian Lilly.
