Raychel Vendetti returns to Erie TV

Just in time for holiday vacation relief comes news of the return to Erie television of former WSEE morning anchor/producer Raychel Vendetti. You’ll remember that Raychel along with Jennifer Mobilia was a causality on the on-air talent side of the merger of the Lilly Broadcasting newsrooms of WSEE and WICU back in June 2009.

This time, Raychel will have to take the long route up Peach Street to the studios of WJET/WFXP, where she says she’ll be “very part-time.”

The truth is I was contacted by Lou Baxter and asked if I would be interested in joining their crew as a part time reporter. Its on a very occasional basis – like Brian Sheridan. I have agreed and will work when they need me. I am excited to be back in the industry part time while I continue to develop the media production company my partner and I started after WSEE’s layoff.

That new venture, the LINEAR_ production house seems to be keeping her busy, but it will be great to see the spunky McDowell and Penn State-Behrend grad back on the beat in this town that she so loves.

Happy Thanksgiving, Erie Media!

At some times in the past 12 months, these pixels have fraught with negativity. I for one am tired of the gloom and doom, so for a least a moment, lets turn our thoughts to what we can be thankful for from the local media that we produce and consume.

So follow me as I count my blessings in my Erie media Thanksgiving list:

  • I’m thankful for the late John Kanzius, who even as his body deteriorated in his final months, engaged his spirit and drive to ensure that the important work of research surrounding his amazing RF machine to fight cancer would continue on.
  • I’m thankful for Dwight Miller and WQLN, who in the face of devastating budget cuts has continued to maintain a strong programming schedule on the public broadcasting stations, including keeping my radio favorite, Marketplace.
  • I’m thankful for the Dave and Jimmy show, and the mighty Dave Kaelin himself, who is the first direct advertiser on Press and Tower. Wanna join him?

WSEE’s 12th & Peach studios shuttered

The end of an era.

After 55 years of continual broadcasting from a building that one housed a hairdressing academy and bingo hall, WSEE is moving to 35th & State as it merges with WICU. Scott Bremner and Jacqueline Policastro aired the final Newswatch from the studio last night at 11:00.

There will be no newscasts from WSEE Friday and over the weekend, but Scott did say that they would have a local cast at 6:00 PM on Monday.

On the staff front, NABET representative Eric Seggi doesn’t expect to have a complete roster of who is being retained by WICU and who is gone until Monday. Meanwhile, as we have been reporting, all off-camera, and several former on-camera talent are now seeking jobs. They include morning anchor and producer Raychel Vendetti, along with reporters Jennifer Mobilia, and Charles Santini.

On Thursday’s last Morning’s Live, Raychel indicated that Ray Petelin would be back Monday, albeit without her. Sources say that Stephanie Schelkun is the leading candidate for the morning show and the Nooner. Meanwhile all indications are that Policastro and Bremner will be anchoring the 7 & 11 PM shows, although on Monday, there will be a 6:00 cast, which will probably be taped.

Go to the new WSEE.tv for videos of some of the reporters’ last newscasts.

Finally, we want to remember that as we are sorting out all of the news and trying to figure out management’s next move, we are feeling a great deal of empathy for those now looking for employment. Our hearts and well-wishes go out to all of the unsung heroes that have served that station and our community; some for decades.

Thank you for your efforts and energy to make our city and our media community a better place.

P&T Interview: Morning’s Live

In early April, after we watched all of the preparations and then the live show from back stage, I had a chance to sit down and talk to the Mornings Live team from WSEE to talk about their show and how it affects their lives. Raychel, Ray, Bob and Megan share some of the special challenges of going to work at an early hour, and how they’ve embraced social media to have a strong connection with their audience. They take on some of the misconceptions people have about their work, and talk about the future of the show.

Given the 10 minute limitations of YouTube, we’ll have the entire unedited interview available as an audio podcast shortly. Enjoy!

Behind the Scenes: WSEE’s Mornings Live

This weekend we launch a new feature here at The Press and Tower called “Behind the Scenes.”

That very simple title describes what we’ll try to do; take a video camera and go “backstage” at Erie’s media outlets to allow viewers, readers, and listeners understand more fully what goes into the media products they consume. Consider it a local media version of the Science Channel show “How It’s Made.”

Our first video is of the WSEE Mornings Live program, which airs Monday-Friday 6:00 – 7:00 AM, with hosts Raychel Vendetti and meteorologist Ray Petelin. We also spent time with Director Bob Bohen and Videographer Megan Spencer. That’s it…four people to produce an hour-long live news program. Take a look.

We also sat down with this team for an interview about their jobs that I will post in the coming days. What they have to say is relevant considering the changes at WSEE and WICU that were announced since the taping.

Finally, if your media outlet would like to be considered for an upcoming Behind the Scenes feature, just e-mail me at joel@nataliemedia.com.
