Erie Observer authors to ignite ‘rich conversation’

I’ve recently hooked up with ErieBlogs.com’s Mike Richwalsky and his business partner Richard Zmijewski, along with Peter Panepento of GlobalErie.com to help facilitate access for Erie businesses to advertise their wares to the thousands of readers our collective blogs touch.

The first effort of this network is the Erie Observer, a weekly e-mail news blast that lands in your inbox on Wednesdays. The first arrived last week, and readers are getting excited. Mike and Peter agreed to give our P&T community the inside scoop on this new venture:

P&T: The idea of the Erie Observer had to come from somewhere…how did the concept come to life?

Peter: This is something I’ve been wanting to do ever since we started GlobalErie three years ago. I believe that you can’t build a good online community with just a blog or a Web site. You need to be able to reach people in a number of ways — online, through e-mail, and through social networks. And e-mail has been a missing piece for us — largely because I haven’t had the time myself to get this off the ground. The idea of being able to do Erie Observer in partnership with ErieBlogs means we can build a much richer conversation since we’ll be engaging people from both of our audiences. We can pull in people who have relationships with both Web sites and, if we do it well, we can get them to interact more on both sites. It’s about strength in numbers. And it’s also about being able to make the most from limited resources. Neither I, nor Mike and Richard from ErieBlogs, do this full time. So if we can share the load, we can accomplish more.

P&T: How has been the reaction to the Erie Observer since the launch last week?

Mike: Good, so far. We’ve had good reactions via email, a good number of Twitter followers and Facebook fans. Maybe the most important metric is that more people signed up after we sent out the first issue, which means word is spreading. I think it helped for people to get a taste of what we want to do before they subscribed. Now that they’ve seen the first issue, they know what to expect and will sign up.

Phil English to blog on GlobalErie

Former Cong. Phil English

Former Cong. Phil English

Local blogging is about to take a huge leap in credibility.

Peter Panepento has announced that former US Rep. Phil English (R-PA) will begin a new blog on GlobalErie.com in the coming days. Panepento says English will tackle Erie issues looking through Beltway-framed glasses:

But he remains closely connected to Erie and I expect that he will be able to provide an interesting view of how what’s happening on the Hill affects life in northwestern Pennsylvania.

English has told me that he plans to be non-partisan in his approach — so don’t expect this site to be falling into the Republican party machine.

Rep. English is now a lobbyist employed by the Arent Fox law firm in Washington. With his 14 years of experience representing this Congressional district, including occupying a seat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, he will instantly become the highest-profile blogger on Erie issues. More than likely, he will also be one of the most controversial, as he accumulated a bevy of haters during his tenure in the Capitol.

The addition of English to the blogosphere in Erie further elevates a paradox in Erie blogging. For as strong as a Democratic foothold this area is, and with the natural bent of the blogging medium to be left-leaning, my anecdotal review of the local blog roster shows more conservative voices than liberal ones.  Is that just my perception, or are there fewer voices pounding for the progressives?

  • Confirm as a friend: Striving to use all avenues available to communicate with the viewing public, Dwight Miller, President of WQLN-TV tells P&T that there is a Facebook fan page now available with the latest news about the station’s antenna situation. The latest news is the climbers were on the tower Friday (10/10) morning installing a temporary digital antenna at about 300 feet. Previously we reported that when the Q goes back to full power, it will be broadcasting only in digital. UPDATED: The Q is back on-the-air in digital only, using a temporary antenna at 300 feet reaching a portion of their normal viewing base. Full power will be up around Thanksgiving.

  • New Ad Federation video honors Jack Tirak: Outside Erie shares with us a video created for last week’s Advertising Federation of NWPA’s Creative Sparks Awards ceremony honoring the memory of Jack Tirak. For our new readers, Tirak had a long and exemplary career in Erie advertising and media, and upon his retirement launched his blog Erie Media-Go-Round which was a force for media accountability and community until his untimely death in June 2008. On the video, TV and radio guy Bob Bach, and newspaperman Jack Grazier share personal memories about their (and our) missed friend. (more…)

Poll: Does the city need a Communications Director?

Participants in last week’s poll about the best cable news coverage of the party conventions favored Fox News Channel followed by CNN.

This week’s poll keys off of a discussion that took place a month ago on Peter Panepento’s blog, Outside Erie. In the comments of the post, “Erie’s Flawed Thinking,” George Vietze gives his account of meeting with the City of Erie’s economic development team and learning first hand the accomplishments of various authorities and bureaus at the city that are making progress toward their goals of creating a better community. The discussion led to the opinion that there are many initatives going on at the city level that are never covered by the Erie media, and that someone in the administration skilled in public relations could help the city better get their message out.

Which leads us to this week’s poll. I hope that many reporters on the street are willing to give us their opinions.

Does Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott need a Communications Director?

  • Yes...the city needs to better manage its message. (57%, 13 Votes)
  • No...he gets the word out about city successes just fine. (43%, 10 Votes)

Total Voters: 23
