Deep Background for September 5-11, 2010

College football began it’s regular season this past weekend with wins by Penn State and Notre Dame, along with Gannon, Edinboro, and Mercyhurst, and a loss for Pitt. Kickoff Weekend for the NFL launches this Thursday night as the Minnesota Vikings fly south to the Super Dome to take on the World Champion New Orleans Saints.

When you mix the start of the grid game and school starting, along with the end of summer vacations and school starting, I think mentally and emotionally this time of year might as well be call New Years more than January 1st.

It’s also time for the new fall TV season to start, often accompanied by new looks in graphics or sets or personalities.

It’s also a good time for our producers of news and entertainment to redouble their efforts after a very enjoyable summer to bring us their best as they communicate their craft and facilitate our community’s unity. That sound too flowery for you? How about we double check our facts, we put a little extra finesse into the package, do a little more show prep for the shift, make sure all of our links go to the right places.

It’s a new year.

WPSE picks up 107.1 Erie translator

WPSE

WPSE AM 1450

AllAccess.com is confirming what P&T had heard for weeks now, that the Pennsylvania State University is purchasing W296BW/Erie, the 107.1 FM translator owned by Michael Celenza. The price was $68,000.

Celenza was transmitting a rebroadcast of the CSN International network, a Christian station from Calvary Chapel of Twin Falls, ID.

P&T has heard that 107.1 will be a new signal of WPSE-AM 1450, which broadcasts business news and Penn State sports from the Behrend campus. FCC rules have changed in recent years to allow FM translators to be used to retransmit AM signals. My understanding is that university funds were not used for the purchase of the station, but came from a donor.

UPDATE: Ron Slomski, the manager of WPSE has confirmed that the 107.1 signal will rebroadcast the WPSE programming stream, if the sale is approved by the FCC.

Selena Wiles forecast: sunshine

Around the WJHL/Tri Cities newsroom, she was known as “Sunshine.”

Well the team at WJET TV 24 are hoping to catch some rays as Selena Wiles enters the anchor chair at Action News 24 opposite Sean Lafferty. Wiles replaces JET-TV fixture Karla Mullenax who left the station this summer to take a communications position at Gannon University.

According to a station news release, after a nationwide search, News Director Lou Baxter stated, “We’re very happy to have found an experienced anchor that has just the right mix of broadcast journalism expertise, education, passion, chemistry, and charm to continue Action News 24s tradition of trust.”  Baxter added, “Selena Wiles is a welcome addition to Action News 24.” (more…)
