Deep Background for February 2011

February is the month for Punxsutawney Phil, February sweeps, Oscar contests, snowmageddon and the Super Bowl. Can’t think of a bigger media month than this one!

Meanwhile, this space sits at the ready for a conversation on what excites, encourages, disgusts, and annoys you about Erie media. Keep it civil…and keep it going.

Deep Background for December 2010

Wow…it’s December already?!?

That means we made it through sweeps, through “Bristol-gate” on Dancing With The Stars, while the networks are hoping for a royal wedding smack dab in the middle of May 2011 Nielsens. The overloaded Thanksgiving newspaper is already in the recycling bin, and Classy 100 and WCTL are “bells-to-the-walls” all Christmas.

Old media: We’re not dead yet!

"I'm feeling better!"

"I'm feeling better!"

A couple of recent studies reveal that somebody didn’t tell the consumers that old media like newspaper, radio and TV is dead.

A Nielsen study found that 77% of adults were reached by broadcast radio on a daily basis, which was second only to television, which reached 95% of all adults. In fact, when it comes to audio media consumption,

The 77% who listen to broadcast radio surpass the 37% who listen to CDs and tapes and the 12% who listen to portable audio devices. Broadcast radio also continues to play a major role to all ages, with almost 80 percent of those aged 18 to 34 listening to broadcast radio in an average day.

“There are a lot of critics out there who want to write off broadcast radio, but this analysis of real-time media consumption shows that it continues to play a very strong role,” said Dr. Michael Link, VP of Methodological Research at The Nielsen Company.

RIP: Radio & Records last issue Friday

Radio & RecordsMy addiction to the trade newspaper Radio & Records began at age 17. 29 years later, it’s over.

Nielsen Media announced that the last issue of R&R will be Friday’s, and the radioandrecords.com website has already been taken down.

My first exposure was those many years ago in the lounge area on the second floor of the old Gannon Theatre, where outside of the faculty offices, you could do some last minute homework, get your WERG or theatre mail, pontificate on the latest move in Erie media (had to start somewhere!), and read R&R.

I did a lot of reading R&R.

Poll: how much TV do you watch?

We struck a bit of a nerve last week when we asked if those who currently produce media in Erie should do more to encourage folks in our minority communities to be more involved in media. It split 2 to 1, with double the respondents thinking that there was plenty of opportunity for minorities to participate in local media vs. those who wish more action was taken to encourage the embracing of media outlets by our minority neighbors.

Last week The Nielsen Co. released its “Three Screens” report (TV, computer & cell phone) for Q4 2008. It revealed that average Americans are spending 151 hours, or six and one-third days watching television each month. That is a record amount, and up 3.6% from last year. This is in spite of the doom and gloom of the pending demise of TV stations and networks that has been preached of late, with more eyes moving to the other screens.

How about you?

How much TV are you watching compared to a year or two ago?

  • About the same (46%, 17 Votes)
  • Less TV (41%, 15 Votes)
  • More TV (13%, 5 Votes)

Total Voters: 37

The Feed for Friday, November 21st

Editor’s note: Sound off, give a shout out on “Deep Background,” our totally-random open discussion of all things Erie media.

  • It’s a Classy Christmas: WXKC/Classy 100 flipped the switch to all Christmas music today. That means that they’ll be playing the Santa Songs for five weeks, nearly 20% of the broadcast year. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! P&T heard a jazzy version of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” by Tony Bennett driving in the snow this afternoon. WCTL is slated to go all Contemporary Christian Christmas on Black Friday.
