Poll: do you agree with Dudley’s take on Sanders?

I had to chuckle at the complaints I received over the wording of my poll about P&T reader usage of Erie Times-News content. Even though over half of poll respondents paid for home delivery of the newspaper, including 41% getting it every day, they objected to my describing their willingness to pay for content as something they should be proud of! In fact, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they paid for the paper at least once a week.

I know it’s shocking (not), but the medium became the message once again this week. Last Sunday, ETN’s John Dudley called out Indianapolis Colts defensive back Bob Sanders for his perceived morph into a media “control freak.”

Dozens of Erie readers freaked at Dudley’s column, and flooded the paper’s mailbox and P&T’s comments stream with negative reaction. I’d like to give you a chance to chime in.

On a scale of one to three, how much do you agree with John Dudley's criticism of Erie native and NFL star Bob Sanders?

Poll: favorite Super Bowl ad?

Some 86% of our poll respondents thought that it would take at least three years, if ever, for local HDTV to arrive in Erie. Meanwhile we will just endure the standard def news and commercial cutaways.

A shocking yet exciting win for the New Orleans Saints last night in the Super Bowl.

It is also the Super Bowl of television advertising, with businesses spending between $2.5 and $3 million per placement. I missed having Pepsi in on the party, but there was some good creative here.

Here was my favorite, from Audi (always loved Cheap Trick!):

What was yours?

Of the USA Today top 10, what was your favorite Super Bowl ad?

  • Mars Snickers/Betty White & Abe Vigoda play football (40%, 16 Votes)
  • Doritos/Dog with bark collar (15%, 6 Votes)
  • Audi A3 TDI/Green Police (13%, 5 Votes)
  • Anheuser-Busch/Clydesdale's friend (10%, 4 Votes)
  • E-Trade/Talking baby explains to girlfriend (10%, 4 Votes)
  • Monster Worldwide/Musical beaver (8%, 3 Votes)
  • Bud Light/House of beer cans (3%, 1 Votes)
  • Bridgestone/Whale cargo (3%, 1 Votes)
  • Coca-Cola/Sleepwalker (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Budweiser/Teamwork bridge (-2%, 0 Votes)

Erie man leads Raider Nation to call for Davis to hire GM

Right now, on the Nimitz Freeway (I-880) close to Oakland Alameda County Stadium, a billboard reads “Mister Davis…do the right thing…please hire a GM.”

This plea to the NFL’s Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis to return the hard-fighting football team to its former glory by stepping down as General Manger has been originated by an Erie man, 22-year-old Jared Staszewski. From today’s press release:

…who along with several other “disenfranchised” Raiders fans got together on an internet fan forum and decided that they would like to send a respectful message to Raiders owner Al Davis, asking him to relinquish operational control of the team to a Professional General Manager and winning coach who will not be “managed” from the owner’s box.

Simons savors Super Bowl scoop

Luke Simons has been racking up the frequent flyer miles recently, with the WJET-TV sports anchor’s latest trip taking him and cameraman Kent Urbanski to Tampa for a week’s worth of coverage of the Pittsburgh Steelers successful run at the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl XLIII. The JET-TV team was the only Erie television reporting unit on the ground in Tampa. They were joined by John Dudley of the Erie Times-News for the weekend and game.

WJET-TV/Erie's Luke Simons and Kent Urbanski at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, FLI asked Luke to share his experiences at the biggest media event of the year. Here he is in his own words, exclusively on The Press and Tower:

P&T: Why did JET-TV make it a priority to follow the Steelers to the Super Bowl?

LS: When it comes to this year’s Super Bowl, I don’t think there was any question as to whether or not we would go.  We have been covering the Steelers all year long and it was only appropriate that we were there when they made it to the Super Bowl.  There’s no doubt that Erie has a huge Steelers fan base, but I also think that there are a lot of football fans that were interested in all of the stories that surround the week of the Super Bowl.  I know it’s hard for Browns and Bills fans to see, but believe me when I say that if those teams were there, we would have made the trip for them too.

Poll: do you Web 2.0?

The football fans who read The Press and Tower have their allegiances, and not only for a particular NFL team. The have a preference for NFL commentators as well. CBS’s Jim Nantz and Phil Simms narrowly won the “A-team” favorites poll with 33% of the picks, followed by NBC’s Al Michaels and John Madden, and Fox’s Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

With all of the recent talk about Twitter, and the proliferation of social networking tools in the new media, we want to know about which Web 2.0 networks do you actually have accounts in. Do you blog, YouTube, or Facebook? Just commenting on a blog or bulletin board without signing up doesn’t count. We want to know about how you’ve actually put energy into establishing a MySpace or Twitter account. Multiple answers for this poll are accepted, so totals will exceed 100%. There are hundreds of apps, so if I missed your favorite, drop it in the comments and I’ll add it to the poll if we get at least two requests for it.

Which Web 2.0 applications do you have accounts in (choose all that apply)?

  • Facebook (77%, 27 Votes)
  • YouTube (69%, 24 Votes)
  • MySpace (60%, 21 Votes)
  • eBay (57%, 20 Votes)
  • Blog (Blogger/WordPress/Movable Type, etc.) (49%, 17 Votes)
  • Twitter (46%, 16 Votes)
  • Flickr (26%, 9 Votes)
  • Wikipedia (26%, 9 Votes)
  • Craigslist (20%, 7 Votes)

Poll: favorite NFL TV commentator team

We have a bit of a diverse crowd here at The Press and Tower. When we asked about how necessary a home-delivered newspaper was to our readers, 38% said that they totally depended on the actual paper on their stoop. However, even more said that they could either deal with partial delivery on weekends or just read it online. Good for the newspaper folks: 82% of our readers consumed the news from the newspaper either in print or online.

We are now in playoff season for the NFL. For the past 18 weeks we have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to pro football play-by-play coverage. So, out of all of the “A Teams” at the networks, who is your favorite?

Which is your favorite NFL commentator "A-team" pairing?

  • CBS: Jim Nantz/Phil Simms (33%, 10 Votes)
  • NBC: Al Michaels/John Madden (27%, 8 Votes)
  • FOX: Joe Buck/Troy Aikman (20%, 6 Votes)
  • ESPN: Mike Tirico/Ron Jaworski/Tony Kornheiser (17%, 5 Votes)
  • NFL: Bob Papa/Cris Collinsworth (3%, 1 Votes)

The Feed for the Weekend of December 20th & 21st

  • Ms. Mengine goes to Washington: former broadcaster, marketing consultant, and Erie mayoral assistant Tina Mengine has been tapped as Chief of Staff for new Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper. I first met Tina some 20 years ago when she managed an area radio combo and I was selling TV campaigns for Film House. She has had a very strong career ever since, including performing duties as acting mayor in the waning months of the Fllippi administration, and setting Mrs. Dahlkemper on a course for victory in the 3rd Congressional District this fall. Tina will head Dahlkemper’s Washington office.
