P&T Interview: Morning’s Live

In early April, after we watched all of the preparations and then the live show from back stage, I had a chance to sit down and talk to the Mornings Live team from WSEE to talk about their show and how it affects their lives. Raychel, Ray, Bob and Megan share some of the special challenges of going to work at an early hour, and how they’ve embraced social media to have a strong connection with their audience. They take on some of the misconceptions people have about their work, and talk about the future of the show.

Given the 10 minute limitations of YouTube, we’ll have the entire unedited interview available as an audio podcast shortly. Enjoy!

Manhunt: power of traditional media

The excellent coverage of the manhunt on Erie’s West Side this morning, particularly by WICU 12 News exemplifies just how powerful the traditional media remain.

It is upon this power that broadcast and print must build to solidify their voice online.

I was riveted by pictures and accounts from 12 News’ Emily Mattson as she related the situation from the area around the west side Tops Market. Having the infrastructure of the live truck plus additional photog crews, a television station can leverage its depth and use the additional streams available to engage the new audience that didn’t even think to turn on the news this morning.

The Feed for Friday, December 5th

Editor’s note: Sound off, give a shout out on “Deep Background,” our totally-random open discussion of all things Erie media.

  • Shannon exits WYNE/Mercyhurst North East: Several sources have confirmed that Erie radio veteran Bill Shannon (former K104 Program Director) is no longer employed at Mercyhurst North East. Shannon ends his long affiliation with the college, most recently starting up a radio broadcasting course of study and flipping the old WHYP 1530 signal to an oldies format. Captain Dan Geary expands his role from doing mornings to basically manning the ship. Personal reasons were cited for the departure.

Election 2008: media winners and losers

Our “coverage of the coverage” of Election 2008 this week wraps up with a review of the winners and losers in the media during this election cycle. I’ll suggest a few and I hope you’ll weigh in with yours:

  • Winner – local television station owners: I heard anecdotally that some $3 billion was being spend on this election overall. Most of that money went to local television advertising for candidates at all levels. In this age of the diminishing impact of all old-line media, that cash flow has a huge shot-in-the-arm for station owners managing the expenses of the conversion to digital and an economic downturn. Poll: consuming news you don’t agree with

There was a strong discussion last week about media bias in their presidential coverage. 3 out of 4 respondents thought that the media was biased toward Barack Obama. Less than 10% saw media bias toward McCain.

On Tuesday, the Erie Times-News ran a story about the feud between Keith Olbermann and Bill O’Reilly. One of points made in the article was that consumers of news want to see it through their own ideological filters. This phenomenon has caused much hand-wringing, with some claiming that it contributes to the polarization of our society.

Really? How about you?

On a scale from one to four, how diverse are the news outlets where you consume your news?

  • 2: I tend to stay with voices that I agree with, but I’ll occasionally listen to opposing views (36%, 8 Votes)
  • 3: Although I have political leanings, I like to get opposing views on issues I care about (32%, 7 Votes)
  • 4: I’m a news junkie and will read or watch anything, no matter where it comes from (27%, 6 Votes)
  • 1: I only read or watch news that lines up with my political ideology. (5%, 1 Votes)

Poll: how well informed are you on the financial crisis?

Last week we posed the question whether or not Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott should hire a Communications Director to better manage the public relations priorities of City Hall. A majority of respondents voted yes, he should have someone manage his message better. However, the low amount of those answering the poll speaks volumes about the ambivalence over the issue, and perhaps city policy…which again, speaks to the need for someone to communicate the city’s relevance! Oh well, next question:

This week was an unprecedented one in the financial markets. One investment bank goes bankrupt, another swallowed up, the government takes over Fannie, Freddie and AIG. And the stock market moves 1500 points in both directions. The general media providers leaned heavily on their financial specialists to explain all the complexity. How do you think they did?

On a scale from 1 to 5, how well are you being informed by the coverage of the current financial crisis?

  • 3 - I have a basic knowledge of the situation from the coverage (47%, 9 Votes)
  • 4 - The media has done a good job of keeping me informed on the events (26%, 5 Votes)
  • 5 - The coverage has helped me thoroughly understand this complex situation (16%, 3 Votes)
  • 1 - I'm clueless, the media has been no help (5%, 1 Votes)
  • 2 - What I'm watching and reading just confuses me further (6%, 1 Votes)

Around the WJHL/Tri Cities newsroom, she was known as “Sunshine.”

Well the team at WJET TV 24 are hoping to catch some rays as Selena Wiles enters the anchor chair at Action News 24 opposite Sean Lafferty. Wiles replaces JET-TV fixture Karla Mullenax who left the station this summer to take a communications position at Gannon University.
