Deep Background for January 17-23, 2010

The pictures from Haiti have been heartbreaking.

The attempt to cover the tragedy of the earthquake has demarcated the limits of even the most highly advanced broadcast technologies. The networks are settling for lots of satellite phone calls and Blackberry video.

Meanwhile, the total devastation has pushed even the most crusty reporter to show their humanity. For me, that’s a good thing.

In this open forum, we express our human emotions as well as educated opinions on media locally and nationally. Get involved with your comments below, or e-mail me, or send a tweet.

Brian Williams: 5 years at NBC Nightly News

I know that the 30 minute evening network newscast are dinosaurs that are supposedly only viewed by the upper demos with leaky bladders and slipping dentures. But I’ve been watching network news since I was a preteen, and find it the best way to catch all of the news in a short capsule.

All three broadcast networks have had evening news anchor changes this decade, but the only one that has had lasting success is on NBC, where Brian Williams rose to the anchor chair left by Tom Brokaw, five years ago Wednesday.

Gibson to be replaced by Sawyer on ABC’s World News

ABC's Charles Gibson & Diane Sawyer

The impact of a IED on a Iraqi roadside would reverberate around the world and through the years to change television news history.

Charlie Gibson planned on retiring from ABC News in 2007, after an amazing run on Good Morning America. He had been on assignment on some of the biggest stories of the late 20th Century, including the Oklahoma City bombing, the 9/11 attacks, and the Columbia space shuttle accident. Upon the death of Peter Jennings to lung cancer, ABC had planned a twin-anchor, male/female approach to World News featuring two of its fast rising stars: Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargas.

But then in the early days of the matchup, Bob Woodruff went to the war zone in Iraq, and that bomb exploded.

CBS legend Hewitt dies at 86

The fellow that made the way for Kevin and Amanda, Sean and Selena, and Scott and Jacqueline died this morning. Executive Producer of CBS News, and creator of “60 Minutes” Don Hewitt succumbed to pancreatic cancer Wednesday. He was 86.

He is considered the father of modern television news, the force behind front men Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, covering all of the major news events in the post-war era. He created the TV news magazine “60 Minutes” in 1968 which set the standard for every long-form news show to come after. He stepped down from his role as Executive Producer in 2004.

He also pioneered TV news staples such as cue-cards, now the Teleprompter, as well as the use of the character generator during a newscast.

Poll: who are your favorite former Erie anchors?

Last week we waxed nostalgic for the bygone days of television news, before the segmentation of 24-hour cable news and advocacy anchors. When P&T readers were asked who was their favorite former anchor, the late Peter Jennings won a plurality of the vote, followed closely by Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw. Jennings and Brokaw contemporary Dan Rather on the other hand received just one vote.

Let’s take this look back local: who are your favorite anchors on local TV? I have to admit that this is a partial list of the bigger names that I can remember. If you have a favorite that’s not on here, let me know in the comments and I’ll add their name to the poll. You can pick up to three on this one, so you may want to vote for just 1 or 2 early and wait til later in the week for your final vote. Of course, our votes will add up to more than 100%.

Who are your favorite former Erie TV anchors? (choose up to 3)

P&T Interview: Morning’s Live

In early April, after we watched all of the preparations and then the live show from back stage, I had a chance to sit down and talk to the Mornings Live team from WSEE to talk about their show and how it affects their lives. Raychel, Ray, Bob and Megan share some of the special challenges of going to work at an early hour, and how they’ve embraced social media to have a strong connection with their audience. They take on some of the misconceptions people have about their work, and talk about the future of the show.

Given the 10 minute limitations of YouTube, we’ll have the entire unedited interview available as an audio podcast shortly. Enjoy!
