Deep Background for October 17-23, 2010

The line dividing national and local media has gotten fuzzy in recent days, with local personalities and events getting national media attention. We’ll talk about that later in the week, but meanwhile you can talk about what you want to on this open forum. And here is a challenge: try not to be contrary for contrarian’s sake. If you have criticism, voice it in a constructive and civil manner.

If you think nobody watches local TV, you could have fooled me!

By the chatter on the P&T comments on the whereabouts of 12 News Today’s Kara Coleman and Mark Soliday, you would have sworn that the PSP had an all-points bulletin out for the anchors. Instead Kara and Mark were on a pre-November sweeps junket to 30 Rock for a promo shoot with the TODAY show stars. Glad we found them!

Why do people love to hate their newspapers?

I mean seriously…give some thought to what is contained in even the thinnest Monday edition of the Erie Times-News: local breaking news from the last 24 hours, couple dozen comic strips, listings of lost and founds and homes and cars for sale, opinion pieces from some of the greatest minds  on the planet (George Will for one), updates from around the world, promotion of upcoming local events, well-designed advertising from local and national businesses.

There is still no other comprehensive place for everything about our community than the ink on paper Erie Times-News. Now I’m a big advocate for new media, and exciting ways to access information, but even with 15 years of the World Wide Web under our belt, no one has gotten close to the total coverage that’s found in the paper.

The newspaper is written and directed by flawed humans for sure, and being human they have biases and blind spots. But to say that the paper, as one commenter on P&T tried to say, “is not fit to line the bottom of my bird cage” shows a total lack of understanding what what’s inside each edition, and it’s not constructive or civil.

And that’s what we are all about in this open forum; constructive feedback for our media producers in a context of civility. So push back with your comments below, through e-mail or Twitter.

Deep Background for September 5-11, 2010

College football began it’s regular season this past weekend with wins by Penn State and Notre Dame, along with Gannon, Edinboro, and Mercyhurst, and a loss for Pitt. Kickoff Weekend for the NFL launches this Thursday night as the Minnesota Vikings fly south to the Super Dome to take on the World Champion New Orleans Saints.

When you mix the start of the grid game and school starting, along with the end of summer vacations and school starting, I think mentally and emotionally this time of year might as well be call New Years more than January 1st.

It’s also time for the new fall TV season to start, often accompanied by new looks in graphics or sets or personalities.

It’s also a good time for our producers of news and entertainment to redouble their efforts after a very enjoyable summer to bring us their best as they communicate their craft and facilitate our community’s unity. That sound too flowery for you? How about we double check our facts, we put a little extra finesse into the package, do a little more show prep for the shift, make sure all of our links go to the right places.

It’s a new year.

Football Friday nights light up Erie newsrooms

“In Virginia, high school football is a way of life. It’s bigger than Christmas Day.” ~ Sheryl Yoast, Remember The Titans

This fall, replace “In Virginia” with “For Erie media.”

Erie’s newspaper, television and radio stations are attacking tonight’s launch of the high school football season with an unprecedented investment of resources.

District 10 Kickoff 2010

Actually, the work started months ago, as the Erie Times-News sports and special project divisions joined forces on the 112-page Kickoff magazine. Billed as “packed with information on each team in D-10 and McDowell, the first-of-its-kind publication promises to fulfill every District 10 football junkie’s needs!” Ingeniously, the magazine is being distributed far beyond the newspaper’s normal delivery footprint at Country Fair stores and costs $5.00. There is even a Facebook fan page of the mag.

So that regular subscribers don’t feel left out, the ETN on Thursday published their special high school football preview issue of the weekly Varsity tabloid, with another 48 pages of schedules, rankings and predictions. All of this data is also available on GoErie.com, where they will again provide ongoing scores and commentary Friday nights via their live blog, on the Varsity page of the site.

Deep Background for August 29 – September 4, 2010

One of the most consistently criticized elements of local TV news is the live truck remote. For breaking news stories, live video “as it happens” could be tremendously powerful in telling the story. But in small market TV, much of the live shots are “after it happens,” with a reporter standing in front of a quiet scene, and often you you are left to imagine what event looked like.

This week, frequent P&T commenter R.I.P WSEE weighed in on the “happy news” live shots at the fairs and festivals, and had this to say about remotes:

Please no more live shots outside a building where a meeting took place hours ago or a verdict was read at 4PM and you are the lead at 11.

You can weigh in about live shots, voicetracking, newspaper shrinking, or any other media topic in Erie and elsewhere on this open forum. Leave a comment below, send a quick e-mail to me, or tweet us @pressandtower.

Deep Background for August 22-28, 2010

August has turned into a time of significant change for Erie’s media.

Long-term TV personalities have flown the market, the newspaper has unequivocally called out County Councilmen and women based on their support of the proposed Community College, the Citadel group experienced a resurgence in Erie’s radio ratings even Connie Media’s #1 station extends its lead, and Erie’s top new media properties join together to further connect their/our readers.

We are covering it all in the coming days after this lengthy hiatus. Meanwhile you can spout off on anything media topic you desire in this open forum. Leave a comment below, e-mail me, or tweet @pressandtower.
