ErieONE: area’s first 24 hour news channel launches

ErieONE

Erie's 24 hour News Channel

The 24 hour news cycle has come to Northwestern Pennsylvania.

ErieONE, the area’s first fulltime local cable news channel launched today from storefront studios in downtown Erie, providing that TODAY show like “window on the world.”

According to a release, ErieONE General Manager Freddy Phirster said, “we’ve made a station that you’ll want to come to first. First in news, first on the dial, and especially first in ad sales!”

The channel spared no expense for its news team and set, complete with a 1/16 scale replica of the Flagship Niagara as the center piece. Weather shots originate from the bow of the ship, but instead of a human meteorologist, in the grand tradition of legendary Erie TV weather puppet Skeebert Skedaddle, ErieONE uses a maritime-themed hologram forecaster named Ollie. The snowy forecast for today was prefaced with an appropriate “shiver me timbers!”

Poll: did Erie’s journalists miss the Erie school budget crisis?

The Super Bowl ads were all about kids and dogs…and this year, a kid won. Nearly half of our poll respondents said they chose the Volkeswagon “Darth Vader” ad as their favorite in the ad sweepstakes generated by the most watched television event ever.

Dominating the newspaper and newscasts now is the battle to fix a huge $26 million deficit in the Erie city school district’s budget for the upcoming year. School directors and citizens alike are baffled on how the situation could get so terrible and no one ever knew about it.

The conversation has reached the point the fingers are being pointed at the news media in Erie for possibly abdicating their “watchdog” role on behalf of the taxpayers.

What do you think? Were our reporters stymied by a well-oiled PR machine that kept flowing only “happy news” out of the district, or maybe intimidated by the leadership in order to keep access, or is it that they missed the debacle just like everybody else?

On a scale from 1 to 5, how much responsibility do you put on Erie's news media for the surprising $26 million deficit in the Erie City school district?

  • 1: the lack of investigative reporting and accountability by Erie's media is very disappointing (67%, 40 Votes)
  • 2: the news media could have done a much better job of challenging the school district's finances (13%, 8 Votes)
  • 3: the media did an average job in reporting (7%, 4 Votes)
  • 4: I thought the reporting about the district and it's issues has been pretty good (7%, 4 Votes)
  • 5: The news media in Erie did an exemplary job in digging for the real story behind Erie's school budget crisis (6%, 4 Votes)

Total Voters: 60
