Poll: when should Christmas music start?

Our poll last week asked readers how open they were to hearing from media with different perspectives than your own. Pretty much respondents said they were somewhat to very open to hearing from media points of view opposite their own.

This week we don our Santa hats and find out when you get into the Christmas spirit:

When should Christmas music begin on the radio?

  • I'm ready for a Holly Jolly Christmas around Black Friday. (65%, 34 Votes)
  • Maybe sprinkle some Silver Bells a week before the holiday. (17%, 9 Votes)
  • Some Silent Night and NORAD tracking of Santa while wrapping presents on Christmas Eve. (12%, 6 Votes)
  • Dude, I need my Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole fix now! (6%, 3 Votes)
  • Bah, Humbug! (0%, 0 Votes)

Election 2008: media winners and losers

Our “coverage of the coverage” of Election 2008 this week wraps up with a review of the winners and losers in the media during this election cycle. I’ll suggest a few and I hope you’ll weigh in with yours:

  • Winner – local television station owners: I heard anecdotally that some $3 billion was being spend on this election overall. Most of that money went to local television advertising for candidates at all levels. In this age of the diminishing impact of all old-line media, that cash flow has a huge shot-in-the-arm for station owners managing the expenses of the conversion to digital and an economic downturn. Poll: consuming news you don’t agree with

There was a strong discussion last week about media bias in their presidential coverage. 3 out of 4 respondents thought that the media was biased toward Barack Obama. Less than 10% saw media bias toward McCain.

On Tuesday, the Erie Times-News ran a story about the feud between Keith Olbermann and Bill O’Reilly. One of points made in the article was that consumers of news want to see it through their own ideological filters. This phenomenon has caused much hand-wringing, with some claiming that it contributes to the polarization of our society.

Really? How about you?

On a scale from one to four, how diverse are the news outlets where you consume your news?

  • 2: I tend to stay with voices that I agree with, but I’ll occasionally listen to opposing views (36%, 8 Votes)
  • 3: Although I have political leanings, I like to get opposing views on issues I care about (32%, 7 Votes)
  • 4: I’m a news junkie and will read or watch anything, no matter where it comes from (27%, 6 Votes)
  • 1: I only read or watch news that lines up with my political ideology. (5%, 1 Votes)

Poll: has election coverage been biased?

Last week we asked about your next technology purchase. The largest percentage said they would be buying a flat-screen HDTV. The next two most popular purchases were a gaming console and Blueray DVD player.

This week, I want to get your opinion about the media coverage of the presidential race. On Wednesday the Pew Research Center released an analysis of how the press reported the 2008 campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain. Their opening statement says it all:

“The media coverage of the race for president has not so much cast Barack Obama in a favorable light as it has portrayed John McCain in a substantially negative one, according to a new study of the media since the two national political conventions ended.”

What do you think? Has the press been down the middle or biased either way.

Has the presidential election media coverage been biased?

  • Yes...the media has favored Barack Obama. (76%, 35 Votes)
  • No...the media is playing it right down the middle. (15%, 7 Votes)
  • Yes...the media has favored John McCain. (9%, 4 Votes)
