Paige HemmisThe countdown is on!

Not only for the Blizzard of 2009, but for the two-hour Extreme Makeover: Home Edition special this Sunday on WJET of the home built here in Erie for Clara Ward, by Maleno Development, hundreds of Erie volunteers and of course, Ty Pennington, Paige Hemmis and the Design Team.

The promo for the premiere is up on ABC’s website. Unfortunately, it won’t embed, but here’s the link:

Although not many participated, those who did answer our poll on electronics Christmas gifts said that high-definition TV’s, MP3 players and computers were the most likely devices to be found under the tree.

UNCONFIRMED: Extreme Makeover Erie build to air December 6th

Ty Pennington

UPDATE: According to local officials closely connected with the Erie build, the airdate of December 6th for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to tell Clara Ward’s story remains UNCONFIRMED. In fact, according to Zap2it.com, the Dec. 6th date is slated to be the Scott family, who had their house just completed last Friday in the Clarkesville, TN area. It seems that everything in network TV is subject to change, so we’ll let you know when we know!

It has just been posted on a Facebook event that the airing of the build of Clara Ward’s home in Erie, PA by the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition design team will hit ABC television on Sunday, December 6th in a two-hour special.

Press and Tower is attempting to get official confirmation from local officials on the air date. Apparently a member of the Maleno family posted the air date on their Facebook profile, and an event was created by another participant of the build.

Extreme Makeover: Erie misses season premiere slot

Wards react to the reveal

Clara Ward’s story won’t mark the launch of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition season premiere.

Instead it will be the build for the Huber family of Wisconsin, which took place over a month later than the Erie build that will be featured on the two-part Season 7 opener on Sunday, September 27th. From a news release:

“Huber Family,” Parts 1 & 2 — On August 3, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” traveled to South Range, WI, to tell Howard Huber, a hero firefighter and his service minded wife, Jessica, that they will have a newly rebuilt home in seven days. Two-time Emmy Award-winning actress Patricia Heaton is the celebrity volunteer for this episode – meeting the family, helping on the build — and the music group Five for Fighting (new single “Chances,” “Superman,” “100 Years”) will perform. The two-part Season Premiere episode airs SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 (7:00-8:00 & 8:00–9:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

When Howie and Jessica met, they each felt they’d found a true partner, someone who valued hard work and community involvement. They bought a dilapidated farmhouse, figuring that Howie could fix it up within a few years, as he’d formerly worked in construction. Although they were struggling financially, Jessica, a nursing student, encouraged Howie to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. Through long hours of hard work, and with as many as five jobs between them, the Hubers were able to both pay off their debt and see Howie established as the most popular and most decorated firefighter in town. In the meantime, both Hubers did everything they could to repair the old house that was the only home they could afford. Unfortunately, they now know that it is far beyond their ability to repair: The two story farmhouse has a chimney separating from house, improperly installed windows, severe water damage throughout, and the electrical, heat and sewage systems are unsafe. Every time Howie goes to work, he fears that the next 911 call he gets might be about his own home. Now it’s up to Ty and the gang to allay Howie’s fears and fulfill his wish to have a home that’s safe for their children.

Ok, so it may not be the first show, but by the looks of this promo, the Erie build should be hitting soon (Clara and her family are all over this piece).

Sights and sounds from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Erie reveal

It has been an amazing week for Erie, and that inherently includes its media.

If a 15-year flood, the appearance of the vice-president, and fatal fires were not enough, local TV, radio, newspaper and new media reporters provided non-stop coverage of the story of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s build of a brand-new home in Erie for Clara Ward. Her story is well-documented, and the entire community is celebrating with her and her neighbors as they have seen their east Erie neighborhood tremendously impacted by 1,000 volunteers decending to not only build the Ward home, but to do beautification throughout.

I want to share photos, video, and audio of the moments surrounding when the Wards arrived at their home. I spoke with a few of the reporters on the scene, and without a doubt there was a tremendous feeling of excitement and awe at how the community came together this week. As Mike Gallegher said earlier, the story is not the house but the people.

Here’s some pictures, with video and audio to follow:

The “Move That Bus!” moment:

Clara Ward gets her dream house today.

The story of a woman who has invested her time, talent, energy, and love to children in her neighborhood began on the rough east Erie streets but turns the page today with a chapter written in Hollywood. The big reveal, the “Move that bus!” moment comes for Clara Ward, the wheelchair-bound mom who makes sure that the kids around her have an opportunity to use their intelligence and creativity and advance their lives.

The new 3,700 square foot home will have plenty of room for Clara’s kids and a beautiful retreat for herself, with a design that reflects what homes in the area would have looked like when new, complete with covered porches on two stories.

If you want to go to the reveal here are the details from the latest release by the builder Maleno Development:

Reveal Should Take Place Between 1 and 2 p.m. Thursday

Spectators wanting to take part in the “Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition’s” “Move that Bus!” event should arrive at the site between 9 and 10 a.m. Thursday.

Builder John Maleno and his family will be on hand to see the reaction of Clara Ward and her family when they first see their new home.

The ABC crew will be filming crowd, bus and limousine shots for the television show beginning at 10 a.m. Spectators are encouraged to bring with them positive signs and their own water and snacks. They are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes since there will be long periods of waiting. And should there be rain in the forecast, they should bring with them raincoats and umbrellas.

Free spectator parking is available at Bayfront and State streets near the Erie Maritime Museum. A shuttle will run to and from the site beginning at 8 a.m. Spectators may take canned goods, children’s books and gently used toys with them on the shuttle as part of a suggested “Read & Feed Admission” to the event. The blood drive will continue Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon for spectators, vendors and volunteers to donate blood. The Community Blood Bank will have its mobile unit stationed at the volunteer check-in area, located at East 21st and Wallace streets.

During Thursday’s festivities, a raffle will take place naming four lucky winners who will receive a private tour of Clara’s home with builder John Maleno and production coordinator Rachel Kielborn. Since the extreme build began, volunteers have been selling $10 raffle tickets for the exclusive tour that will take place Friday, July 3. All proceeds will go to the Maleno Family-to-Family Fund established by the Maleno family to fund future building and renovation projects in Erie.

The handing over the keys to Clara is not the end of the story, however. As we enter a new chapter for her ministry to abused and neglected children, it is important that the community continue to support and resource her. It will be our responsibility to turn a one-week feel-good project into a catylist for real change in the heart of Erie.

P&T Interview: Mike Gallagher at Extreme Makeover-Erie

WJET-TV’s Mike Gallagher has nearly “moved in” to Clara Ward’s new home at the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build here in Erie. He’s getting major access to what is essentially a “closed set” because he is producing a behind-the-scenes documentary for both JET-TV and the builder on the job, Maleno Development.

During our live blog from the build Monday morning, I sat down with Mike to talk about the stories he is discovering from this project in Erie’s inner-city.
