Poll: your #1 for cable news

When we asked P&T readers if the media was partially to blame for the public’s lack of knowledge regarding the huge deficit currently facing the Erie city school district, two out of every three thought that local news gathering organizations fell down on the job in keeping the district accountable. One in five said that the reporting was average or better.

In the spirit of our little April Fools fun, let’s ask a real question…who do you go to for 24 hour news?

Who is your #1 cable news source?

  • Fox News Channel (34%, 19 Votes)
  • CNN (30%, 17 Votes)
  • MSNBC (16%, 9 Votes)
  • Headline News (11%, 6 Votes)
  • Other (please note channel in comments) (4%, 2 Votes)
  • Bloomberg News (2%, 1 Votes)
  • Fox Business Channel (2%, 1 Votes)
  • I don't have cable (2%, 1 Votes)

News Corp. to charge for online content

Rupert Murdoch wants to try to cancel the free lunch online readers enjoy while eating away at his company’s, News Corp.’s, profits.

As quoted in his paper, the New York Post:

“Quality journalism is not cheap,” he said. “A newspaper that gives away its content is simply cannibalizing its ability to produce good reporting.”

“We intend to charge for all news Web sites,” Murdoch said, referring not only to the online versions of newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, The London Sun and The Post, but also to news-related Web sites like those of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. Murdoch added that he expects to begin charging for news content online sometime during this fiscal year.

Murdoch has also lost faith in the ad-supported broadcasting model, and is looking to generate revenue from cable companies and ultimately end users for watching programming from his Fox TV network. Meanwhile, the article mentions that the industry is headed to a showdown between the content creators like News Corp. and the aggregators such as Google and Yahoo! who argue that their services enhances the originating brands.

There are plenty of naysayers out there that claim that only select brands like the Wall Street Journal are successful in charging for content, but there continues to be a dearth of any better ideas that pay for professional journalism.

Poll: how connected are you “on-the-go”?

The financial crisis has dominated the news the past few weeks, and last week we asked the question how you felt the media was doing in explaining the problems with our economy. The overwhelming majority felt that the media helped them achieve at least a basic understanding of the issues at hand.

This week we’re interested on how pervasive wireless technology is with our readership. Just how “tethered” are you?

How connected are you "on the go"?

  • Smart phone with email and internet access (45%, 14 Votes)
  • Normal cell phone with text package (29%, 9 Votes)
  • Normal cell phone only (19%, 6 Votes)
  • No cell phone (6%, 2 Votes)
  • Smart phone with email package only (1%, 0 Votes)

Poll: how well informed are you on the financial crisis?

Last week we posed the question whether or not Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott should hire a Communications Director to better manage the public relations priorities of City Hall. A majority of respondents voted yes, he should have someone manage his message better. However, the low amount of those answering the poll speaks volumes about the ambivalence over the issue, and perhaps city policy…which again, speaks to the need for someone to communicate the city’s relevance! Oh well, next question:

This week was an unprecedented one in the financial markets. One investment bank goes bankrupt, another swallowed up, the government takes over Fannie, Freddie and AIG. And the stock market moves 1500 points in both directions. The general media providers leaned heavily on their financial specialists to explain all the complexity. How do you think they did?

On a scale from 1 to 5, how well are you being informed by the coverage of the current financial crisis?

  • 3 - I have a basic knowledge of the situation from the coverage (47%, 9 Votes)
  • 4 - The media has done a good job of keeping me informed on the events (26%, 5 Votes)
  • 5 - The coverage has helped me thoroughly understand this complex situation (16%, 3 Votes)
  • 1 - I'm clueless, the media has been no help (5%, 1 Votes)
  • 2 - What I'm watching and reading just confuses me further (6%, 1 Votes)
