  • It’s a Classy Christmas: WXKC/Classy 100 flipped the switch to all Christmas music today. That means that they’ll be playing the Santa Songs for five weeks, nearly 20% of the broadcast year. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! P&T heard a jazzy version of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” by Tony Bennett driving in the snow this afternoon. WCTL is slated to go all Contemporary Christian Christmas on Black Friday.

  • GoErie scores with Joyce trial posts: it may not be the OJ trial, but the mail fraud and money laundering case against former state Superior Court Judge Michael Joyce has many of the elements of an engaging trial. That plays right to the strengths of the new media, and GoErie.com is staying in the game with periodic posts as the trial unfolds. Erie Times News reporter Lisa Thompson is in Pittsburgh, giving the reader excellent coverage of the testimony in near real time on GoErie and a thorough retelling for the morning paper. (more…)

  • No news for you: these are salad days for television stations in swing states, with plenty of demand for political time 2 ½ weeks before the election. It appears that the demand for commercial time has trumped programming priorities at WICU. Over the past several mornings, instead of the typical local news cut-in during the Today show at 7:25, viewers were fed 6 minutes of non-stop spots, nearly all political. Meanwhile WJET and WSEE ran at least minimal local news and weather breaks as part of their morning shows. A request for an explanation from Ch. 12 went unanswered. I’m sorry, but I just can’t imagine the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, or Harrisburg preempting their traditional Today show newsbreak for nothing but spots no matter how lucrative…this is just “bush league.” (more…)

Poll: How do you line up with Pat Howard’s views?

Based on our poll last week, a plurality of P&T readers get their sports fix most often from online sites and blogs, with cable sports running a close second. Local radio and TV sportscasts tied for third place.

This week we get a little political. It is without question that Pat Howard, Managing Editor of the Erie Times-News is the most pervasive editorial voice of the Erie traditional media. How do his values line up with yours?
