Dixie next assignment for Bostonian Rupolo

John Rupolo

John Rupolo

When John Rupolo came to the Erie market joining WICU, he turned heads in a couple different ways. The first difference was his age and experience; something we are not used to in newcomers to Erie TV. Second is his aggressive reporting style which for some has been controversial.

Rupolo’s differences have led him to breaking stories, in-depth reporting, and now a ticket to be the investigative reporter for WFTX/Fox 4 News, Cape Coral/Fort Myers FL.

After graduating from Emerson College in Boston and stints in Providence, Springfield, MA, New Hampshire and Erie, the native Bostonian crosses the Mason-Dixon line to a beat on the Gulf Coast. Rupolo has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Erie:

I have loved being in Erie.  It is a very special place.  I did many great things here that I am proud of and broke many stories that other media outlets later picked up.  It is with a heavy heart that I am leaving – physically I am leaving Erie but a little piece of me will always remain here.  So many great memories, long hours, hard work, and working with a great staff. I wanted to thank News Director Julie Eisenman for her leadership and owner Brian Lilly for the opportunity.

He leaves at the end of the month.

Radio passages: Cervi, Twomey mourned, Kasem retires

Over the past few weeks the radio community both locally and nationally has seen more losses.

The founder of WVCC, now WMVL/Linesville-Meadville, Art Cervi passed away on Sunday, June 14th at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie. He was 89. According to the obituary in the Meadville Tribune, Cervi was a World War II veteran who went to work at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh after the war. It wasn’t until he was 50 years old when he went after his dream and began WVCC after receiving notoriety as a DJ of big band and pop music first in Pittsburgh then throughout the Meadville area. He operated WVCC for 33 years, selling it to Joe Vilkie in 2003. I remember Art as a very kind and generous gentleman who was in his element out in the public, holding court on “radio row” every year at the Crawford County Fair.
