ETN’s Cheeseman speaks: We’re alive

In the past year, the Times Publishing Company, along with most other U.S. newspaper publishers, has had to ensure a severe advertising slow down, the near-evaporation of their classified advertising cash cow to the online space, leading up to employee buyouts at the end of 2008. Nearly every day, the public has heard the drumbeat of negative news about the newspaper business: Tribune Co. goes bankrupt, the Rocky Mountain News folds, the Detroit newspapers go to limited home delivery.

Poll: eliminate some newspaper home delivery?

Press and Tower readers have spoken: no loan bailout for big city newspapers. Last week’s poll showed 88% of respondents with that response. The “yes” response got one vote.

We’ll stay with newspapers for this week’s poll. We are expecting an announcement any day now from the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press that the papers will no longer provide home delivery four days of the week. On those days, news would be available online and through a slimmed-down print version available at newsstands.

Now with the Erie Times News better than average penetration in the Erie market, a major change like this may not be necessary. But if push came to shove?

How necessary is home delivery for your newspaper use?

  • Very necessary: I rely on that daily paper on my stoop every morning (38%, 19 Votes)
  • Not necessary: I only read the paper online, and just occasionally buy the paper at the store (30%, 15 Votes)
  • I don’t read the paper; I don’t care (18%, 9 Votes)
  • Sometimes necessary: I can go online or buy the paper at the store on those days that the paper wouldn’t have home delivery (14%, 7 Votes)

Total Voters: 50
