The Instant Ted Williams Story

In a “near” exclusive…we have from the Dave and Jimmy show the Instant Ted Williams Story. It shows in a minute-55 how one homeless man with a great voice went from an I-71 interchange to the couch on the TODAY show in a matter of hours.

Thanks to Dave and Jimmy for this:

WJET alum Kaelin middle of ‘golden voice’ whirlwind

Dave Kaelin/WNCI

Dave Kaelin of the Dave and Jimmy Show on WNCI, surrounded by TV cameras covering the Ted Williams story

Dave Kaelin says that this morning’s radio show was the most gratifying he’s ever done.

Kaelin, the “Dave” half of the syndicated “Dave and Jimmy Show” that originates from WNCI/Columbus, was a dominant voice in Erie radio in the 1980′s. Since 1990, he has dominated Columbus morning drive. But in 20 years, he hasn’t had a program like this morning’s.

Dave and Jimmy’s guest today was Ted Williams, a homeless Columbus disc jockey who is the subject of a viral video produced by the Columbus Dispatch newspaper, which has generated 5+ million hits on YouTube…all since Monday. The radio hosts wanted to offer Williams a day’s wage to appear on their show today, but as of Tuesday morning, they didn’t know how to reach him. So they put a shout out over the air and one of Williams’ friends got him in touch with the station.

By the time he went live with Dave and Jimmy Wednesday morning, he was an international sensation, although because of his limited access to the internet, Ted Williams didn’t know it. Dave and Jimmy throughout the show today presented offer after offer that poured in for employment for Williams. By tonight, he was featured on every nightly newscast.

Here’s how it looked on CBS, complete with a quote by Dave Kaelin:

Now that’s a great story!

Happy Thanksgiving, Erie Media!

At some times in the past 12 months, these pixels have fraught with negativity. I for one am tired of the gloom and doom, so for a least a moment, lets turn our thoughts to what we can be thankful for from the local media that we produce and consume.

So follow me as I count my blessings in my Erie media Thanksgiving list:

  • I’m thankful for the late John Kanzius, who even as his body deteriorated in his final months, engaged his spirit and drive to ensure that the important work of research surrounding his amazing RF machine to fight cancer would continue on.
  • I’m thankful for Dwight Miller and WQLN, who in the face of devastating budget cuts has continued to maintain a strong programming schedule on the public broadcasting stations, including keeping my radio favorite, Marketplace.
  • I’m thankful for the Dave and Jimmy show, and the mighty Dave Kaelin himself, who is the first direct advertiser on Press and Tower. Wanna join him?

Press and Tower Podcast-June 6, 2009

I have a treat for all of our P&T radio junkies. This Press and Tower podcast features an exclusive interview with Dave Kaelin.

Dave Kaelin and Joel NatalieDave is half of the syndicated morning show Dave and Jimmy, originating from WNCI/Columbus where Dave has awakened the Buckeyes for the better part of 19 years.

Dave got his start in the Erie market, attending Edinboro University and as an air personality on WSEG and WJET-FM in the 1980′s until he went on to WNCI. Longtime Erie radio listeners will remember him as Wailin’ Dave Calin on Jet FM 102, part of the Cook and Calin drive-home show that was so popular 20 years ago.

Enjoy this time of remembering the past and Dave’s take on the current and future state of broadcast radio.
