The Feed for Friday, October 10th

Editor’s note: Sound off, give a shout out on “Deep Background,” our totally-random open discussion of all things Erie media.

  • Confirm as a friend: Striving to use all avenues available to communicate with the viewing public, Dwight Miller, President of WQLN-TV tells P&T that there is a Facebook fan page now available with the latest news about the station’s antenna situation. The latest news is the climbers were on the tower Friday (10/10) morning installing a temporary digital antenna at about 300 feet. Previously we reported that when the Q goes back to full power, it will be broadcasting only in digital. UPDATED: The Q is back on-the-air in digital only, using a temporary antenna at 300 feet reaching a portion of their normal viewing base. Full power will be up around Thanksgiving.

Poll: Does the city need a Communications Director?

Participants in last week’s poll about the best cable news coverage of the party conventions favored Fox News Channel followed by CNN.

This week’s poll keys off of a discussion that took place a month ago on Peter Panepento’s blog, Outside Erie. In the comments of the post, “Erie’s Flawed Thinking,” George Vietze gives his account of meeting with the City of Erie’s economic development team and learning first hand the accomplishments of various authorities and bureaus at the city that are making progress toward their goals of creating a better community. The discussion led to the opinion that there are many initatives going on at the city level that are never covered by the Erie media, and that someone in the administration skilled in public relations could help the city better get their message out.

Which leads us to this week’s poll. I hope that many reporters on the street are willing to give us their opinions.

Does Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott need a Communications Director?

  • Yes...the city needs to better manage its message. (57%, 13 Votes)
  • No...he gets the word out about city successes just fine. (43%, 10 Votes)

Total Voters: 23

This week, let’s go from the quantitative to the qualitative:

Which cable news channel had the best coverage of the national party conventions?

  • Fox News Channel (40%, 14 Votes)
  • CNN (29%, 10 Votes)
  • C-SPAN (20%, 7 Votes)
  • MSNBC (11%, 4 Votes)

Total Voters: 35
