Poll: how often do you use social media?
August 10th, 2009
joel When it comes to job prospects for this year’s incoming communications freshmen, P&T poll respondents definitively rejected the sentiments of the 80’s song “The Futures So Bright, I’ve Got to Wear Shades”.
Some 86% of the those who took the poll last week said that it would be tough to impossible for future job seekers to find a gig when they graduate. Only one voter thought that there were “excellent” prospects for graduates with communications degrees. In my opinion, I thought these poll results were too negative. Ever since I started in this business in 1983, the job market has always been tough, but at the same time there is always room for someone who pays his/her dues, is creative and flexible with strong character and work ethic, and advances their skill set. And at the same time, there will always be those periods where you end up “on the beach.”
Last week, a Denial Of Service attack basically liquefied Twitter and severely hindered traffic on Facebook and other social media sites. It’s never struck me that Twitter’s site has been particularly robust, so it was prime for hackers to “break out a can.” According to CNN.com, some users were in “near-panic” when the popular sites were down.
How addicted are you to social media these days?

Response to Erie cop YouTube reveals city’s poor message management
April 22nd, 2009
joel Jimmy D.
The use of a pet name to refer to the leader of the internal affairs unit of the Erie Bureau of Police by the Mayor of the City of Erie was the tipping point early on in the continuing case surrounding the behavior of an Erie policeman caught on video and displayed on YouTube. The lack of professional response to the crisis set before them by the Mayor and Chief of Police Steve Franklin during that first interview by the Times-News’s Ed Palattella meant that this situation would have a much broader scope than the outrageous antics of one drunk cop “letting off steam.”
By originally putting the focus on the video author and the attempt to remove it from YouTube via court order, the city has shown that it has a deep lack of understanding of the modern media landscape and crisis management tactics. They didn’t realize that while they were responding with poor judgment when the video was first revealed, that they were already reluctant passengers on an Acela bullet train that would take this story global, complete with close to 60,000 hits on YouTube for the original video so far this morning, thousands more on the copies, CNN and Fox News calling for talking heads, and a U.S. Department of Justice investigation in play.

joel The story regarding the YouTube video which recorded a profane, visibly-intoxicated Erie City policeman has broken nationally.
The video on YouTube as of Sunday evening has received over 19,000 views and over 1,500 comments. Also Sunday, CNN weighed in with a feature on the video and interview of the referenced murder victim’s mother, and the national director of the NAACP. No one from the Erie Bureau of Police was available to appear on the cable channel.
This video from CNN was the 14th most played video on Sunday evening.

Confirm as a friend: Striving to use all avenues available to communicate with the viewing public, Dwight Miller, President of WQLN-TV tells P&T that there is a Facebook fan page now available with the latest news about the station’s antenna situation. The latest news is the climbers were on the tower Friday (10/10) morning installing a temporary digital antenna at about 300 feet. Previously we reported that when the Q goes back to full power, it will be broadcasting only in digital. UPDATED: The Q is back on-the-air in digital only, using a temporary antenna at 300 feet reaching a portion of their normal viewing base. Full power will be up around Thanksgiving.
