One of the most consistently criticized elements of local TV news is the live truck remote. For breaking news stories, live video “as it happens” could be tremendously powerful in telling the story. But in small market TV, much of the live shots are “after it happens,” with a reporter standing in front of a quiet scene, and often you you are left to imagine what event looked like.
This week, frequent P&T commenter R.I.P WSEE weighed in on the “happy news” live shots at the fairs and festivals, and had this to say about remotes:
Please no more live shots outside a building where a meeting took place hours ago or a verdict was read at 4PM and you are the lead at 11.
You can weigh in about live shots, voicetracking, newspaper shrinking, or any other media topic in Erie and elsewhere on this open forum. Leave a comment below, send a quick e-mail to me, or tweet us @pressandtower.
Embrace the chaos!

Headlines in Broadcasting/Cable that you never thought you’d see: “KTXL Airs What’s Said To Be First-Ever Pot Spot.” http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/456603-KTXL_Airs_What_s_Said_To_Be_First_Ever_Pot_Spot.php?rssid=20065
Actually, that should probably say the “First LEGAL Pot Spot.” I would bet that some underground college station in the 60′s might have done a head shop spot that might have also promoted a controlled substance or two…
I just made a wonderful discovery, and it has changed my television viewing habits…. FOREVER! I was watching a vintage episode of the Andy Griffith Show featuring a character I have loved time and time again. As a matter of fact, the whole show, the cast, the overall tone… I loved it all. The episode that caught my attention today got me to wondering.
“Hmmmmmm,” says I. “I wonder if I can get the name of the episode so that I can find out more information about it online.” And so, I consulted the onscreen TV guide that I pay for as part of my monthly Time Warner cable subscription, and there it was plain as day. Of course, I had to come to the only TV in my home with a box to get the info, and I had to scroll to the right time and channel box, but I got the info.
I took the episode title to Google, my favorite online search engine and there they were…. YouTube video clips of the episode. Wow, TV the way I envisioned…. the gold mine has been discovered! Beautiful color and crystal clear clarity provided by the latest computer technology, and this is the best part….. NO DIGITAL GRAFITTI! No Logos, No Banners… even the commercial breaks were omitted… now that’s what I call a major step forward.
Having advanced technology is great, but to discover the treasures, you need knowledge!
How come WJET-TV no longer uses a Tower Cam for liveshots for weather and the end close? I thought it was a nice touch.
Speaking about liveshots, did anyone see Tom Atkins 5pm live at the first day of the Erie County fair last week? He was standing in front of a building with no one around. Classic violation of live shot rules – shouldn’t he have been in front of a crowd with some action?
Let’s getcha on into the graphics…
Maybe it’s broke and NEXSTAR won’t pay to fix it.
“Maybe it’s broke and NEXSTAR won’t pay to fix it.”
sounds like someone knows his ownership groups…
Yeah, I don’t think that NEXSTAR is going to pay someone to scale a huge tower just to fix a tower cam that is used once or twice a day in market 146. Not going to happen.
Is Jill Perkins still with WSEE? Have not seen her recently on Mornings Live.
Is she the one that they fired after just 2 weeks? Feel sorry for the girl. Typical leadership at 12/35.
So far there have been numerous production and technical glitches for WJET’s coverage of the Tall Ships. Is this what we have to settle for in market 146 for live coverage? I dont want to be too critical but didn’t Channel 24 have several weeks to plan out this coverage? I’m sure the live coverage will polish itself in time for the 6 o’clock hour.
