Deep Background for January 3-9, 2010

Let me take the opportunity of the first Deep Background of the new year to renew our commitment to civility and constructive conversation on this forum. To quote our first Deep Background post back in September 2008, here’s what civility is all about:

What is Civility?

Civility is defined as “to bring to a technically advanced and rationally ordered stage of cultural development”. The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership has developed a strategic initiative on community civility and has defined civility as follows:

  • Being inclusive
  • Listening
  • Showing Respect
  • Being Open Minded
  • Taking Responsibility
  • Celebrating Ideas
  • Knowing the Facts
  • Getting involved

So let’s begin the new year with new emphasis on being on the solution side. Sure, share your complaints but why not add an idea. Where recognition is deserved, send it. The way media works these days…we are all in it together.

It looks like WICU is looking for a one-man-band reporter to shoot, write and edit their own material. I wonder how this will fly with the union there.

This is not the only open position at WICU/WSEE. There are more job openings on WICU’s website, four just posted yesterday night (Jan. 4), another from November, and a sales position. I did not check WSEE’s website, however.

Here are the open positions with links to the postings:

    Producer (posted Jan. 4) – http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=8798&type=jobs

    Multimedia Journalist (posted Jan. 4) – http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=8797&type=jobs

    Anchor/Producer/Weather Presenter (posted Jan. 4) – http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=8796&type=jobs

Anchor/Producer (posted Jan. 4) – http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=8795&type=jobs – This seems like Policastro’s former position at WSEE for six and eleven o’clock newscasts.

Weekend Meteorologist/Reporter (posted Nov. 2) – http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=8491&type=jobs – This seems like Cheryl Scott’s former position.

    Sales Professional (posted Oct. 15) – http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=8410&type=jobs

All the job openings are listed here: http://www.wicu12.com/news/?type=jobs

It looks like we will see several fresh faces on WICU and WSEE in the future. I have been wondering when Lilly Broadcasting was going to post some more job openings because they have lost a few people recently. They hardly had weather people for WSEE’s Mornings Live around the holidays and ended up taping forecasts the night before…

Does Kristen Kane still work for WICU/WSEE? I have not seen her on-the-air in a while, but she did appear in a station promo WICU runs at the top of the hour. She has done weather fill-ins on Mornings Live a couple of times, and this made me wonder why they did not throw her on-the-air when Ray went on vacation. There are rumors about her on the Topix board “Death of WSEE”, but I would rather not introduce them here…

  3. Dano says:

How about that sensational journalism last nite at 11 by Mr. Rapolo? Johnny’s interviewing the cousin of the shooting victim on Buffalo Rd. and tells him his cousin is dead. Nice touch John. You couldn’t have done that off camera?? Classy.

  4. YES

If you know what I mean
    Right

  5. K104Ever says:

    Rapolo is **edit**

Did you see him anchor the other night? Terrible.

  6. R.I.P. WSEE says:

I’m telling you all, when they go to recast the movie “The Flintstones”…..Yabba Dabba Do! John will be off to Hollywood for the role he was born to play!

  7. R.I.P. WSEE says:

Word is that WICU was flooded with calls from p*ssed off viewers upset at how Rapolo sensationalized the story and tactfully told a relative that their cousin was shot dead. A real “Peabody” award winner there!

  8. ~JB says:

Anyone hear the radio stations on 89.5 and 90.1? Seems to be unlicensed. 89.5 id’s as “The Word” with R&B and 90.1 as “The Movement” with Gospel music. Both have had ads run from someplace on Parade Street. Both signals seem to cover the city quite well.

Anyone know anything about this? Was back in town for the holidays and noticed theses stations while about town.

  9. Tom Lavery says:

They are pirate stations that are illegal to operate. In addition, they are running ads in the non commercial band of 88.1 to 91.9 FM.

  10. JimGriffey says:

I find it ironic that some people are using illegal means to spread the Gospel. Perhaps they should be reminded about the commandment that forbids stealing.

  11. R.I.P. WSEE says:

    Amen! Brother Jim (pun intended!)

  12. Tom Lavery says:

Heck, Darrell Sivik in Meadville has been a pirate on 88.3 for years though he says that he can broadcast as long as the coverage does not exceed 20 miles. (Um, actually it’s 1/4 of a mile.) Yeah (Sarcasm) and he is also allowed to run ads in the non comm band as well. Darrel needs to follow the law like Sam Reese at 92.9 WXCS did with his LEGAL operation out of Cambridge Springs.

  13. barry s says:

Sure is a lot of crap on the radio these days, i applaud the efforts of these pirates to bring something worth listening to on the radio. Unless you like the mindless dribble on corporate cloned radio, then by all means complain away.

  14. Rick N says:

You mean you don’t like hearing bohemian rhapsody five times a day everyday for thirty years straight ? Go pirate radio !!!!

  15. Sam says:

The answer is an expansion of low power FM, not pirate radio, that will bring more culture and relevance to the airwaves. The Senate recently voted for the expansion of LPFM, so if you’d like to foray into real local radio go to http://www.fcc.gov/lpfm/ and start doing your homework.
