Jim, I went to the ASCAP site and read the article. It looks like this list is only ASCAP-represented songs. There might be a more complete list somewhere that would also include BMI and SESAC music.

Bob, I too have worked in retail on Black Friday & it’s crazy. I have some of those Firestone LPs in my collection. I don’t know what is worse, woring on Black Friday or running those holiday pledge specials on WQLN. It’s definitely a toss up here. As for that Top 25, it’s way off base. I’ll stand by the standards as well as some country holiday tunes from years gone by like Roger Miller’s “Little Toy Trains.”

ASCAP just released their list of the top 25 Christmas songs for the past decade in terms of sales and radio play. What was #1? Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song?” No, that was #2…How about Bing’s “White Christmas?’ Nope…came in at #6 behind Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” No, the top Christmas song for the past decade was “Winter Wonderland” by the Eurythmics!!!!

You read right.

I, for one, can only handle Christmas music briefly until about December 23rd or so. I’m just that way. (Though I recommend you all check out Bob Dylan’s “Must Be Santa” on youtube or on Zimm’s own website. If all Christmas music was this good, I could handle a lot more of it!) I’m that Grinchy person who doesn’t put my lights up on Nov. 15th, or who doesn’t buy a tree as soon as I digest turkey & stuffing. I now work in retail, and believe me, if you ever want to lose your Christmas spirit, work on Black Friday in a department store. I can’t wait for the season to be over – and the music 24/7 does not help! Some of it is fantastic – I love the traditional songs done reverently by choirs, the songs from the old Firestone albums that my mom has, but also Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas”, and, of course, Darlene Love’s annual appearance (Dec. 23 this year) on Letterman to sing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). When I hear that, then I know it’s Christmastime!

I think the release of a Christmas album signals either a desire for quick cash (in the case of newer artists) or a sign that you’ve run out of new ideas (in the case of established artists). The exception being, of course, if your Christmas album consists entirely of original songs…which is seldom the case.

Also WMVL Cool 101.7 in Meadville has been mostly Christmas for a few weeks now. When I begin to listen to all Christmas music it will be Sirius XM’s “Holiday Traditions.” Some of the new covers are simply awful in my opinion compared to the Masters of Holiday Music: Bing, Dean, Frank, etc.

I’ve been listening to Classy100′s Christmas music since they started playing it. It puts me in the spirit of the season and takes my mind off of the things that really don’t matter.
