I’ve doing a lot of reading about the state of wireless technology and the impact that the Apple iPhone has had on that space. The advent of the Steve Jobs’ brainchild was the first time subscribers switched carriers to signup for a particular phone brand.
The current Verizon Wireless campaign touting their 3G network vs. that of AT&T’s is a strong example of harsh yet smart comparative advertising. AT&T is answering with their own maps saying that they indeed have coverage available to 97% of Americans, although the fine print begins “3G not available in all areas.”
For me, as much as I desire an iPhone, there’s no way that I can leave Verizon and their free “in” calling, because so many in my sphere of influence are in the network. Also, with four phones on our family plan, I’m paying as much of a wireless bill as I wish to carry.

I. Too love the iPhone… but I won’t switch from verizon for the same reason. I am typing this from my droid phone, which is a great alternative. It doesn’t have the aesthetics and coolness factor of the iPhone and I hate the name… but I’m liking it anyway!!!!
Folger’s Coffee has updated the classic “Peter Comes Home For Christmas” We just saw the new ad on “Everybody Loves Raymond” tonight on WJET.
First some info on the first ad, courtesy of Yahoo! Answers:
Here a link to the classic ad in the 60-sec. full length: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4kNl7cQdcU
The new one is not available on the web…yet. But here’s a story from last week about it.
Joel:
I can’t wait until local TV starts running those classic Star Mobile Home Ads, the ones sung, poorly to the tune of “Carol of the Bells”! It’s the kind of local production quaility that gives Denny Braendel a run for his ad money.
Does anyone know the evil reason WICU ran this Sunday’s WSEE “Sportsblitz” show a day in advance rather than airing a live newscast, which viewers were expecting?
The “Sunday SportsBlitz” also ran on WSEE at 11pm SATURDAY Night. Maybe Lilly Broadcasting was trying to save a few dollars more before the end of the year?
Outstanding News! The WICU 60th Anniversary special is set to air on Saturday December 26th. I will be eagerly looking forward to see what time the special will air.
Thanks Joel!
Tim,
I’ll believe after it has aired.
The news did not run on either WSEE or WICU on Saturday because of the company Christmas party. In my opinion they should have at least done the 6pm and had the party in the evening and taped another news episode before heading over to the party. Nothing says Coverage You Can Count On and Working For You like taking the night off **edit** and letting the competition have the exclusive all night long.
I’m amazed that they even had a party for the employees. I figured that BL would be a total scrooge. He seems like such a tight wad with the way he runs the place.
not when it comes to parties. he can pay you in free alcohol, but not with a salary.
Yeah I ended up watching WFMJ’s 6pm news from Youngstown because there was no news on WICU.
I loved the Star Mobile Homes ad where some lady yells “Make it Stop!!!!” when the choir is singing. Another was an Action Painting ad poking fun at Braendel’s singing ads with someone dancing & painting to Pink Elephant. They asked which painting service would you prefer Brand A or Brand L. Let it sink in for a second. Very clever.
How can a news organization that brands itself as “Coverage You Can Count On” be taken seriously after cancelling an entire evenings worth of newscasts just for a Christmas party?
That is a strange, strange operation they have going at 3514 these days.
Somene s’plane something to me (bad Ricky Riccardo impersonation)
On WJET’s noon news, Amelia Segal went on about a tornado that touched down in Oil City. Warnings were issued, towns folk scurried to their basements etc.
But at 11 o’clock, Tom Atkins didn’t even mentioned it.
What’s up with that? If I’m the N.D. I would tell my Chief Meteorologist to at least mention this for viewers, even if it turned out to be nothing with no injuries or property damage. Thoughts? Comments?
Did Amelia say “tornado” or “possible tornado” (based on radar activity? My bet is that it wound up amounting to nothing and that Atkins was more concenrned about the big snowfall headed our way and prepping the viewer for that.
“confirmed tornado on the ground near Oil City”
I checked my tape of WJET from yesterday. Amelia Segal DID in fact say “CONFIRMED tornado on the ground near Oil City.”
At 5pm Tom Atkins showed some pictures from Steve “MainStreet” Marshall – WJET resident storm chaser/stringer. Tom mentioned a “possible radar indicated” Tornado but “no touchdown or damage” near Oil Creek State Park. So it was mentioned at 5pm – by 11pm it was old news and no need to mention it.
Move along. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Wait a minute pal. a “certified” meteorlogist says confirmed touchdown. The “#1″ weather dude says no touchdown. (Officials are reviewing to see if the ball in fact crossed the plain)
All I’m looking for is consistancy. If it turned out to be nothing and I saw the noon but missed the 6PM, I’m out of luck Huh? I think the viewers of Venango county and the entire DMA deserve more that’s all.
RIP WSEE: then why don’t you call Lou Baxter or Tom Atkins and express your concerns to them? I’m sure they would listen to you? Thanks pal
Every one in Venango county knows the news is so bad in Erie, they watch KDKA or WPXI. Because they can! That also means they can watch a Steelers game and not a Bills game. I miss KDKA
Love KDKA down here in Cochranton. While I may be in the middle of nowhere according to some people, it’s a sweet spot reception wise for Erie, Pittsburgh & Youngstown. 3 antennas here makes a huge difference.
