Big week ahead for traditional media folks as they cover the local elections on Tuesday, setting up live shots for the TV stations, and actually having live humans in the Boston Store studio after 7:00 PM at JET Radio.
We’ll be all be watching and reading for the latest, most accurate returns, as well as moments of brilliance in the reporting. It will be important that every news supplier brings their “A” game.
You can ask “A” question, provide a comment or quote on this open forum. For a private message to me, send me an e-mail to joel@nataliemedia.com or tweet @pressandtower.

ETN = clueless.
Pat Howard rightfully takes Sinnott to task this day since the review panel takes the Mayor and Top Cop to task over the police fiascos in town. The panel said “we told you to do these changes years ago, and you did NOT do a single thing”. Read Pat Howard:
http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091101/OPINION04/311019944
Then, we find an election is occurring in town and a Mayor has to be endorsed by the good folks at the ETN.
And who do they choose as ideal for Mayor?
You got it! Sinnott….with four years of on-the-job-training! Look at this bizarre story, and within is a blurb on Sinnott’s opponent. (That would be Jack Anderson, an ETN pariah).
1) You can’t find the Anderson information in the article.
2) Here is the whole blurb on Jack Anderson:
“The case for Jack Anderson
Jack Anderson is making his fifth try for mayor. This time, he’s done his homework and reached out to constituents, including police officers and firefighters.” That is ALL.
Erie folks need to take a coin to flip in the booth this week. More useful than ETN info to date.
“Doing your homework” is a surefire way to lose an ETN endorsement.
So we have a negligent mayor regarding policework, who gets ETN endorsed, and an opponent who reached out to police and others, with NO CLUE from ETN on what he did to “reach out”
Here is ETN endorsing Sinnott for being a whopper of a mayor , simultaneously as Pat Howard above, informs the Mayor he is OVER the police department, ….just so he will know in the next four years.
The endorsement:
http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091101/OPINION01/311019998/-1/OPINION
A tip to ETN as you roll out GoErie again
(what is this the 8th time??):
Fix your horizontal hold.
Your stories move around, after they finally gear their way into appearance. Edinboro graduation ceremonies are quicker.
Don’t expect the ETN to ever do their homework on a candidate. The Meads and their puppet staff will endorse whomever pays them off. The ETN is a trash rag that’s only good for wrapping up the garbage.
On a totaly unrelated note…it’s November 2nd…any predictions on how soon our local radio will start with the Christmas music? Didn’t Classy 100 start a few weeks ahead of Thanksgiving last year?
I think the endorsements will do the most damage in the race for County Executive. I only hope everyone gets out to vote and maybe we can start turning this community around.
They said I didn’t understand the scope of the job for county council! But I am opposed to higher taxes and the Community College so I guess that’s where my endorsement went. Make sure everyone votes to prove them wrong!
I didn’t understand either why the Times-News would have a large story blasting Sinnott over the police fiasco, and then basically say he is the no-brainer choice and endorse him for mayor in their editorial. It was very contradictory.
Well Dan Desrochers,
If Jack Anderson met with this editorial board FIVE times, and this time was lauded for “doing his homework”,
that implies he was unendorsed previously for NOT doing his homework.
I mean what does it take to get endorsed ONCE in FIVE trips to the Holy Grail there?
No Homework. No endorsement.
Did your homework? No endorsement.
Anderson MUST want the job to try five times, and Sinnott has been swimming under water four years without taking a breath of air or emitting a bubble.
He’d be a great manatee.
Anderson has experience for the Water Department since he was around with Moses when the Red Sea was parted by God, I am sure he picked up some efficiencies from that miracle. Elect this guy before he is dead.
Or does ETN expect homework by death too?
Then we have Desroachers not understanding the scope of the job.
This implies that the ETN DOES understand the scope.
Well, what is the scope ETN?
And, will ETN moan the fact that new blood is never seen in politics in this place? ALL of Desroachers blood is new. He gives it all away at the Blood Bank for cryin out loud!
Who knew the scope of the job in Washington DC 3rd District? Phil with 14 years or Kathy with 14 minutes?
(Disclaimer: I favored Kathy cuz Phil let all our business leave town for 14 years. His ankle tattoo showed on TV one day on CSPAN and I thought it said loser, but I could have been wrong).
But scope is scope. Hey ETN! Give us some scoop on scope, eh? Desroachers over there has given his blood for years. You want more than blood for office now?
No offense Dan, but I favor community college.
I favor building 25 NEW colleges minimum, and producing students as exports from Erie, instead of Zurn flush handles for the john, or Hammermill paper. We need specialized colleges for medicine, engineers, public administration?, international spying that works, tree girding…wait, funeral industry does that.
You get the idea though. We could produce students for the globe if we build more colleges.
Last, I have commented on ETN board meetings and internal functions at Motive Grounds. But Erie Blogs was busy with entries that day and he scrolled on and off fast. Here is a reprise of my comment there, on ETN and how they really work:
http://www.motivegrounds.com/blog/?p=47
What was the Uplink truck doing parked behind Channel 12 today? (Besides taking up all the parking spaces?) Did Brian Lilly finally decide to get the news department a new toy? It was a pretty sweet looking truck with a serious dish on top.
The Grossman endorsement in the ETN gave as a major reason to support Barry the transition team of community leaders he has identified. However, I am at a loss to find any mention of the team or any members in the ETN since Grossman announced his candidacy. One would think if that is the primary reason Grossman should be elected, the specifics would be given at least once–and logically when it is cited in the endorsement. That is a stylistic concern. The greater and substantive concern is that this team of “leaders” is yet another case of “round up the usual suspects” and will consist of recycled politicos, has-beens and wannabees.
Danny
What a great post! You made me laugh out loud with the whole “scope” issue. I think political endorsements by the media as a whole are a bad idea. It shows they think they know more than the voters do.
It’s ironic, ETN has had big layoffs and cost cutting measures to deal with declining revenue yet they are opposed to layoffs and cost cutting measures for government because declining revenue (and rising debt) because that would be bad.
NEW GoErie = Redundant, because “we dunn dat”.
We have a new, new, new, new, new GoErie (finally).
I thought it would be reasonable to give the opening day a chance to get the bugs out, and look at it on Day 2.
That’s today.
The first thing I noticed was what THEY think of the new (X 10) GoErie. Here is what the ETN folks say about ETN:
“Some of you will love what we have done with GoErie. Some of you might feel opposite. And then there are some of you that might think we have lost our mind.
Our goal is to serve you all….”
As Kevin Cuneo would say: “I think the Times-News got that exactly right!”
On the Home Page, there is a NEW logo that says “GoErie.com” , and then waves a curly line through the word, as if they have a doubt, and are crossing the word out. Not to worry! The old logo with red pill and snarky snake for a “G” is liberally spread throughout GoErie, giving this website TWO logos.
Top that world!
Speaking of world, there are three “news” tabs on Home Page. “Local”, “National”, “State”, in that order ????
World is no longer an option in tabs to look at.
The global news is in a secret spot.
Behind the NEW Logo are a series of “rays”.
I tried to recall where I saw them before.
They are copped from Kim Fabrizio’s Multiple Sclerosis Blog….color removed. Check them both:
http://mysunstillrises.wordpress.com/
(color rays at top)
http://www.goerie.com/
(rays at top with no color)
Dunn Tire sponsors the weather, and I thought the wheel above was appropriate. Closer look and the “tire” is actually the Boston Store Clock! (Not a Dunn Tire, unless tire design was done again by GoErie and they put a clock on your wheels, giving new meaning to GoErie).
Check out the front page Crime Map.
I recommend “Hybrid” giving you map and satellite at once. Then, hit the minus arrow (lower left) repeatedly until all the “pins” become one pin, and Erie becomes the globe flattened out. All crime in this world is then in Erie, PA.
Someone was arrested for a “Cosmetic” act on West 2nd St.
The address was left out presumable since West 2nd is now mostly vacant lots.
Wear no cosmetics on West 2nd St in Erie, just to be safe. Also, an “UNLWF DISPO” occurred at
“4xx E 11 St DN”. Is that a new language?
There is a whole new pile of videos to watch now.
This is in response to losing TV stations in Erie and going to mini YouTube stuff, in lieu of TV death.
I hit “play” on a video called “Unique Erie Weddings”, that has a pic of a bride flying through the air like the Flying Nun from days of yore. Maybe it is her!
I hit play 3 hours ago, and it may come on one day for me to review. It is a black screen so far.
I tried “Supermarket Socializing” video too, but got black screen. Reminded me of the gray and white “rays” at the top of Home Page.
It may be early to voice an opinion on this new Goerie, since every page I click, takes me to the old GoErie format.
I saw a spot marked “Community Blogs” and thought they were gonna give Erie Blogs a run for the money, but a quick check shows it is still the remaining five employees, plus Scott Bremner.
I hope to report on that “Flying Bride in the Air” if it ever comes on. Maybe Scott Bremner could show ‘em how video works.
I encourage this audience to write in here…. to Press and Tower…. with suggestions you see at real websites on newspapers you read. Maybe someone at GoRrie will read them here, as no one reads Goerie.
The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and LA Times are all well laid out and navigable, to name a few.
If you are gonna copy Kim’s rays (with color removed), how about copying the best of the websites out there now?
Dan Desrochers,
Thank you for your kind words; laughter never goes out of style.
I also hope you forgive me for not spelling your name right a couple of times there. We have a guy in town named Joe LaRocca who goes around and corrects every mis-spell, punctuation error, misplaced modifier, and Venn Diagram of all thoughts. Joe let me down by failing to blast me for not getting your name right. My bad!
Endorsements are a true form of bias in the media.
They should be forbidden en masse.
Media should report on all candidates fairly and equally, inform the voters, and let the chips fall where they may.
However, critical thinking skills,…. no, make that ALL thinking skills, are removed from people as they enter kindergarden, and exit between 9th and 12th grade.
Conformity is rammed down our kids until all look like zebras with matching stripes of thought. Then they are released into the world.
Having been told what to do, when, how, no why…just do it, for all those years, allows media to continue endorsements and tell you who to vote for.
If an exit poll was done all day today, and local media asked every person who votes to name ANY state judge currently in office, not one person could name anyone in PA state judge robes (some would maybe answer Mike Joyce, but he changed robes).
For what it is worth, you (Dan Desrochers) ran a clean campaign without whining and negativity.
Win, lose, or tie (could happen in this town), you ran a decent campaign all year.
We are grateful for that!
Watching 12news at 5 and they did a cute story about “professional” wrestling but NEVER mentioned the new unemployment number of…10.2%.
I guess Kathy Dahlkemper didn’t authorize THAT story.
How’s that stimulus working for you.
How about a story detailing ALL of the private sector jobs created in the 3rd district by the $787 billion in borrowed money.
That report wouldn’t consume much air time.
12 news…a day late and a dollar short.
danny it’s been a while since i have found the time to read blogs or at even the times. i enjoyed your blogs on judge domitrovitch and researched your other posts. you have a way of pointing out every aspect of a situation with sharp wit and sarcasm that i chuckle or say he’s right in original posts and responses to your detractors or uh oh haters. i am a mother of a 4 year old and work 45 hours a week so i catch up when i can and it better be stimulating…. i will continue to catch up on yours, read pat howard and the erie times letters to the editors. i am hooked.
Dear kc,
What a serendipity for me to come to Press and Tower and find TWO personal compliments…… on my comments
(Dan Deroschers was the other).
And I love the way you use New Media, like the Press and Tower, to communicate with a certain gentleman you know:
“one out of three women think their men should…shut the hell up
oops i mean shut your mouth darling”
~~~kc
…….an observation that made me laugh out loud!
(I always thought it was closer to 9 out of 10 women holding that view, so I sit in great relief this evening with your stats, as they come from a mom.
Moms are NEVER wrong!).
I am in absolute agreement with you, on comments being stimulating, or shut the hell up.
The ETN had a great gal writer, who stimulates with words, and so she got out of the ETN fast. But she made a blog for a while that was outstanding in eclectic thought. (She is in hiatus for now; perhaps she wants a 4 year old and a 45 hour work week one day and needs to set aside writing???).
Anyway, since you found my comments more stimulating than No-Doz pills, and you write at midnight, I am linking a “Thank You” comment I made long ago to the former ETN staffer in her private blog.
My “Thank You” to her…..is word-for-word, given to you this day, as well! (Comment 1 on the link).
Follow the link (WITHIN her post below) for some stimulation, kc.
It is an oldie, but good advice if you have a 4 year old and work.
Best regards,
Danny Lucas
