Deep Background for August 2-8, 2009

Plenty of irons in the fire here at The Press and Tower, even as we try to relax at the end of a 11-day vacation from the day job. While away I caught a little NYC & Philly TV and was blown away by the production values embedded in even a Saturday morning newscast in the big markets!

As we countdown to the one-year anniversary of the launch of P&T, the feedback and encouragement I’m receiving confirms that this tool is an important part of the Erie media community. Your contributions make this blog, so thank you for your continued participation.

In honor of Joel’s return from the Jersey shore here is a classic show close from WPVI-TV 6 Action News. The Anchor’s have a good time teasing each other. Check out the close when the Cameraman gets a closeup on a Woman smoking a Cig…and she doesn’t even realize she’s on camera – classic!

(I have no idea what a snowman is doing outside in Philly in August – but it’s Philly so why ask why!)

    Oops…better link

Does anyone know any information about the Erie Press Club which was located on West 8th between Peach and State? Dates of demolition?

  4. Joe LaRocca says:

McGensheimer: Check with Betty Peebles, 95, who was profiled in Kevin Cuneo’s last column, or Meg Loncharic.

Old Analog Radios and TVs… I LOVE ‘EM! “Don’t Touch That Dial!” was, perhaps, one of the best phrases used in mainstream media from the past. Does anyone know how to start up an Analog Recycling Program?

I’d like to find a good dial radio besides the Tivoli. The GE Superadio and Sangean models I have are both clunkers.

There’s a place on W 26th near Pulakos that repairs and sells the antique type.

Alright, no big surprises with Thursday’s weather, just about all of our local weather gurus blew the forecast. Who is the blame? well, no one really. Shifting weather patterns, cold air aloft over a warm lake Erie…if this were winter, we’d still be digging out from lake effect snow.
But if your weather dudes blow the forecast, I don’t think a sure fire way of building a news audience is to discredit them on the air!
Thursday night Kevin McDowell was ribbing poor Cheryl Scott about the forecast. Dude, if you want to rib someone, rib Rob Wilson not the fill-in weather winkie!
I doubt N.D. Julie brought Kevin into her office to tell him that discrediting the main tune-in component of your entire newscast could drive viewers away.
