Sometime Thursday morning, Ty Pennington will grab the noticeably low-tech bullhorn to rouse an Erie family and tell them that their lives would be changed forever. The deserving family will be sent on a amazing vacation while Ty and his crew build the family a new home in seven days.

Here are the latest details:

  • The family will be revealed to the public about noon Thursday, and interviews with the family will appear on the Thursday evening news. Sometime after 4 PM the family will embark on their vacation
  • Friday will be a construction setup day
  • Saturday demo occurs
  • Sunday the house framing and construction begins
  • All slots for volunteers are long taken, however Grace Church in McKean is looking for help for the accompanying neighborhood side projects that will be happening. Some $20,000 in cash will be needed and you can donate by clicking here
  • Donations for the build, as well as for the Maleno Family-to-Family fund are also needed

You can follow the project’s progress at www.malenoextremehome.com. We will update you later Thursday on this post as the family’s name is released.

Poll: Can you see Erie DTV?

News of radio’s demise has been greatly exaggerated.

When we asked last week for the top choices of on-the-road entertainment, 6 of 10 respondents said that listening to regular, old, free radio was on the list. Half said they listened to CD’s or cassettes. About a third listened to their iPod or satellite radio on their road trips.

I’ve been reading on a nearly daily basis in the Times-News Letters to the Editor folks complaining about losing one or more channels since the digital television transition. Although I have digital cable at home, I had a similar experience in rigging up my father-in-law’s coversion box in his camper while he was visiting at the bayfront campground last weekend. His rotating rooftop antenna was getting any number of Canadian analog stations from 150 miles away, but when we hooked the converter box up, we only received3 of the 5 Erie broadcast stations. At the time, WICU was still going through their buildout, but we were also not receiving WJET.

It could have been a glitch that evening, but with the critical mass of complaints that P&T and others are receiving, I want to ask this question TO ERIE OVER-THE-AIR VIEWERS ONLY (no cable or local on satellite viewers, please).

As an over-the-air digital television viewer, which Erie TV stations are you able to watch? (check all that apply)

  • WQLN (PBS) (83%, 57 Votes)
  • WFXP (FOX) (78%, 54 Votes)
  • WICU (NBC) (75%, 52 Votes)
  • WJET (ABC) (74%, 51 Votes)
  • WSEE (CBS) (62%, 43 Votes)

Deep Background for June 21-27, 2009

This is going to be another big week for Erie media. I mean when was the last time a national production company set up shop for a week to produce a one hour feature completely on site locally for one of the broadcast networks?

That’s what’s happening beginning Thursday morning when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition begins its eight-day construction odyssey for ABC television with a door knock on one Erie address. The Press and Tower plans on reporting the “behind the scenes” of how a production of this magnitude takes place.

You can discuss the project and just about anything else related to the Erie and national media on this open forum. Please send any private messages to joel@nataliemedia.com or tweet @pressandtower.

Did Bush attack Obama at Manufacturer’s event?

1600 people couldn’t be wrong, right?

John Guerriero didn’t think so. While covering former President George W. Bush’s speech and question and answer session at the Manufacturer’s Association annual event, the veteran Erie Times-News reporter described “a relaxed and engaging citizen-in-chief.” Portions of Guerriero’s reporting went into the The Associated Press wire piece about the occasion was equally even-keeled.

However Washington Times reporter Joseph Curl saw it differently. In an article headlined, “Bush takes swipes at Obama policies,” Curl equated Bush’s reaffirmation of his capitalist and anti-terrorism ideologies, hardly breaking news, as attacks on the Obama administration.

Even though Curl admitted that President Bush repeatedly said that he would not directly criticize President Obama, the Times reporter took Bush’s defense of his eight years of policies as an attack on Obama.

In my review of the reporting, all it took was one reporter; even better, one headline writer of an influential newspaper to send the political class all chattering.

The Drudge Report had the screaming headline: “It’s On: W Slams O!” at 4:45 AM Thursday. That was enough to send FoxNews, The Huffington Post, MSNBC, USAToday.com, and even the NBC Nightly News into a feeding frenzy over the “fact” that President Bush took the gloves off.

That was news to the $180 a plate glitterati at the Bayfront Convention Center!

JET-TV’s Kim Thomas interviewed political leaders that were at the event, including Manufacturer’s and Business Association President Ralph Pontillo:

I’m at a loss as to why the national media is trying to spin this in a negative way when in fact the President never once spoke out against the current administration under any of the questions he was asked or in his presentation whatsoever.

We were not able to confirm any existence of the transcript of President Bush’s remarks before post time. But isn’t it curious and troubling to have everyone actually at an event relate first-person content that is totally at odds at what is now considered reported “fact” by a national media who did not even attend?

Or is this evidence of a national press corps that is so sensitive to any public comments that are contrary to the current administration’s policy, that just a restating of pre-January 20th philosophy is considered a slam.

WQLN lays off five, cuts salaries

Dwight Miller has been warning us for months that if something didn’t change in the state budget for the upcoming year, it was going to be a painful summer for public broadcasting in NWPA.

WQLN-TV

The pain is here.

In advance of the elimination of state funding for public broadcasting coming in two weeks, WQLN Public Media made deep cuts to its personnel and operating budget Tuesday. According to broadcast and published reports, five employees have been let go, including program director Gordon Stroufe, and Director of Engineering Ed Upton.

Other cost-cutting moves include:

  • 5% salary cuts for all management, with Miller taking a 10% cut
  • Two-week unpaid furloughs fro all employees
  • Hiring and wage freeze
  • No unnecessary travel, conference attendance, and staff training
  • The “Marketplace” financial program on WQLN-FM will be dropped

Miller told JET-TV that they tried to cushion the blow on the viewer:

Our goal is for viewers not to see an impact on the services we provide to them. We were very strategic in choosing positions to try to minimize the impact that the public will see. But eventually it will have an impact in the long run.

WQLN normally receives $800,000 from the Commonwealth, and neither version of the state budget currently being considered in Harrisburg would continue that funding. There is hope that a portion of the funding could be restored in the final budget bill. If that were not to happen, more layoffs could be likely.

Poll: how do you entertain yourself on a road trip?

Perhaps it is the relative newness of EVDO 3G wireless broadband in the Erie market, but only 30% of P&T poll respondents said that they had listened to live audio streaming or watched video on their smartphones. Meanwhile, 60% said they were more inclined to use their phone solely for calling and texting.

It’s summertime and the vacations and road trips are already happening. Part of the traveling experience is the entertainment you enjoy while getting to where you are going. So what keeps you company on the long drive?

You can choose your top three choices, and if I missed something, drop it in the comments and I’ll add to the poll.

What are your top entertainment choices in your car on a road trip (choose up to 3)?

  • Listen to terrestrial radio (61%, 19 Votes)
  • Listen to CDs/cassettes (52%, 16 Votes)
  • Listen to iPod/mp3 player (35%, 11 Votes)
  • Listen to satellite radio (32%, 10 Votes)
  • Watch DVD's (19%, 6 Votes)
  • Play video games (10%, 3 Votes)
  • Listen to podcasts (10%, 3 Votes)
  • Surf the web (0%, 0 Votes)
