Deep Background for May 10-16, 2009

I must admit to a nervous tension for this upcoming week in Erie media. We are getting very close to the June 1st deadline for WSEE’s news team to be integrated with WICU. What impact the merger makes on employment levels continues to be uncertain and a source of stress for all.

Anyone else attempt to watch 60 Minutes tonight on WSEE? Started out…sound…no picture…then the remainder of the hour…picture…no sound. Nice to see they’re paying attention over at 3514. What a joke!!

I noticed it, and there was a baseball piece I would have liked to have watched and listened to simultaneously.

The day of reckoning for the WSEE Employees is rapidly approaching. According to multiple sources, Thursday May 14th is the day the entire staff (behind-the-scenes AND on air talent) will find out if they still have employment. Apparently that date was supposed to be Friday May 8th but Brian Lilly can’t seem to make up his mind what he wants to do.

    Here are Mr. Lilly’s options:

1.) Behind-the-scenes employees are terminated and WSEE News uses WICU production staff and equipment to put on newscasts at Noon, 7pm & 10pm (on the CW) – no decision on what to do with the Morning News, yet. WSEE Reporters & Anchors keep their positions.

2.) All WSEE employees (behind-the-scenes AND on air staff) are terminated leaving WICU Reporters, Anchors and Production staff to put on newscasts on both stations.

3.) No one is terminated. Everyone moves into 3514 State and chaos ensues due to lack of room, strategic planning, etc.

In my opinion, Option #1 seems most likely. I wish it wouldn’t happen but as was noted in a previous entry, Brian Lilly is trying to make a go of it in the worst economic environment in the history of broadcasting. However, don’t be surprised if everyone at WSEE is laid off and WICU runs everything with their own staff and resources.

Thursday can’t come soon enough for 1220 Peach?

I recorded 60 Minutes on May 10. I always set my DVR to record for 2 hours because of all the delays from football, golf, etc. When I tried to view it I noted the audio/video problems described above, but I also saw that they continued into the 8:00 program. Does anyone know when or whether normal operation was restored at WSEE on Sunday night??
