We struck a bit of a nerve last week when we asked if those who currently produce media in Erie should do more to encourage folks in our minority communities to be more involved in media. It split 2 to 1, with double the respondents thinking that there was plenty of opportunity for minorities to participate in local media vs. those who wish more action was taken to encourage the embracing of media outlets by our minority neighbors.
Last week The Nielsen Co. released its “Three Screens” report (TV, computer & cell phone) for Q4 2008. It revealed that average Americans are spending 151 hours, or six and one-third days watching television each month. That is a record amount, and up 3.6% from last year. This is in spite of the doom and gloom of the pending demise of TV stations and networks that has been preached of late, with more eyes moving to the other screens.

I think what is important is what people are watching, compared to how much they are watching.
Since I got a DVR a couple of years ago, I’m watching only things I want to watch… not just settling for watching something to pass the time because there isn’t anything else of interest on.
I am watching more, I got an HD TV for Christmas, just a month after we signed up for Dish network. There are all kinds of great shows where all they do is blow stuff up in slow motion!
Heavy D, I have a question. Did your conversion to Dish sway you to get an HDTV due to the program content, or was that a planned purchase?
Jimbo,
sorry so late on the reply. I am a home theater guy from way back. I got with Direct TV 6 weeks after the first satellite went live back in the early 90s. I just sold my 14 year old laser disc player on eBay this week ( got over $100 too!) I am headed for blue ray ( still waiting for them to mature a bit) and since I have HD on DISH it’s not that big of a deal to wait. I new it was all coming togther and I wanted to make sure we had programming in place before before Santa delivered the HD TV.
I am spending quite a bit more on DISH but I am now getting like 50 HBOs and a BUNCH of Hi def content. My big complaint is I lost the TV size fight with my wife, we have some beautiful cabinets from early in our marriage ( before kids!) and I couldn’t exceed what would fit. My 37″ looks great but a 42″ would have been even better.
