The Feed for the Weekend of December 20th & 21st

  • Ms. Mengine goes to Washington: former broadcaster, marketing consultant, and Erie mayoral assistant Tina Mengine has been tapped as Chief of Staff for new Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper. I first met Tina some 20 years ago when she managed an area radio combo and I was selling TV campaigns for Film House. She has had a very strong career ever since, including performing duties as acting mayor in the waning months of the Fllippi administration, and setting Mrs. Dahlkemper on a course for victory in the 3rd Congressional District this fall. Tina will head Dahlkemper’s Washington office.

You stay jazzy Mercyhurst

In the radio biz, you usually hear about format changes after they are made, but not for WMCE.

Yesterday, Mercyhurst College released news that in February WMCE will change to a full-time jazz format. In my conversation earlier with Station Manager Michael Leal, the plan is to program a straight-ahead traditional jazz format, while keeping their weekend specialty shows. As for the classical format, it hasn’t seen growth. From the release:

However, station Director Mike Leal says the WMCE listening audience hasn’t grown in the past 10 years, leading him to consider strategies to increase the station’s appeal.

“We want to program music that’s not available elsewhere in the Erie market,” he said. “We didn’t want to duplicate what was already out there.” He says research shows that the radio audience for jazz nationwide has grown 6 percent over the past 10 years, so WMCE will soon become the first full-time jazz station in Erie. (Public radio station WQLN-FM does carry jazz shows, including “Jazz Flight” hosted by psychology department chair Rob Hoff, but is better known for classical music and talk shows.) With a new sound and a new look, the station will also begin using a new tagline, calling itself JAZZ FM – “Erie’s Jazz Station.”

The changeover to jazz will also give Communications students at the college more of a chance to participate in the programming and be mentored by the announcers at WMCE. The syndicated classical format mostly precluded that.

Poll: eliminate some newspaper home delivery?

Press and Tower readers have spoken: no loan bailout for big city newspapers. Last week’s poll showed 88% of respondents with that response. The “yes” response got one vote.

We’ll stay with newspapers for this week’s poll. We are expecting an announcement any day now from the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press that the papers will no longer provide home delivery four days of the week. On those days, news would be available online and through a slimmed-down print version available at newsstands.

Now with the Erie Times News better than average penetration in the Erie market, a major change like this may not be necessary. But if push came to shove?

How necessary is home delivery for your newspaper use?

  • Very necessary: I rely on that daily paper on my stoop every morning (38%, 19 Votes)
  • Not necessary: I only read the paper online, and just occasionally buy the paper at the store (30%, 15 Votes)
  • I don’t read the paper; I don’t care (18%, 9 Votes)
  • Sometimes necessary: I can go online or buy the paper at the store on those days that the paper wouldn’t have home delivery (14%, 7 Votes)

Total Voters: 50

The ‘Hawks stay home for a Saturday-Sunday matchup with Fort Wayne, then on Thursday, it will be their first locally televised contest on Image Sports Network (TWC city 20/suburbs 13) against Dakota.

Rush ‘laid off’ from WJET

Rush Limbaugh appears to be the latest victim of cost-cutting at Connoisseur Media’s WJET 1400.

In a response for a request for comment, CM-Erie General Manager David Calabrese indicated that station decided to go in a different direction:

The economy is tough and layoffs are everywhere, Rush is the victim of a slow economy and we decided to lay him off rather than affect someone locally.

Rush’s people were uncompromising with us. We feel that the Dennis Miller decision is a good one for the region and the station.

One can speculate that Rush’s new multi-million dollar contract has come into play with clearance renewals at the local level. Given the margin mandates that the corporate operators live under, the relatively inexpensive Dennis Miller show must have looked enticing.

Miller’s show launched in March 2007 and airs in Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. He seems to take a lot of listener calls, and sprays tons of his intellectual conservative humor throughout the program.

By my calculations, Rush has been a mainstay of WJET middays since 1990 or 1991, when the call letters were WLKK and Tim DeCapua owned 1400 as a standalone AM.
