Money for nothin’: Erie could lose its MTV

FINAL UPDATE: WSJ.com is reporting this morning that an “agreement in principle” was reached between Time Warner Cable and Viacom shortly after midnight. No details have been disclosed.

UPDATED: Dueling press statements: Time Warner Cable | Viacom
Viacom is running this ad in major markets to generate support for their side:

Time Warner Cable customers turning on MTV, Comedy Central, or Nickelodeon this morning will likely see a scroll at the bottom of their screen warning that they could lose the channel by midnight tonight.

At the core of this alarming news is an ongoing carriage contract dispute between the cable operator and Viacom, and 19 cable channels are at risk for Erie viewers. According to the Huffington Post this morning, “Media giant Viacom Inc. said its Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and 16 other channels will go dark on Time Warner Cable Inc. at 12:01 a.m. Thursday if a new carriage fee deal is not agreed upon by then. The impasse over carriage fee hikes would mean ‘SpongeBob’ and other shows like ‘The Daily Show’ will be cut off to 13 million subscribers.”

Meanwhile negotiations reportedly continue at the most senior executive level.

In the balance are the following channels: Comedy Central, CMT: Pure Country, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic, and VH1 Soul.

Get your DTV converter coupons now!

We have reached the “urgent” phase of the digital television transition.

In this morning’s Washington Post, government officials are quoted as urging viewers who wish to continue to use their analog TV sets and do not yet have the converter boxes necessary to watch digital television as of February 17th, to order their $40 coupons by Wednesday to ensure that they will get the discount. From the Post:

“We’re urging consumers who need the coupon to apply by December 31 so they have plenty of time to get the coupon, buy the converter box and connect it before February 17,” said Todd Sedmak, spokesman for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, an agency within the Commerce Department that is running the coupon program. “Some people may need someone to buy it for them or help connect it to the TV and antenna. Order it now, and it still gives you six weeks to take care of it.”

The coupons expire 90 days after mailing, which at this writing is taking about three weeks from ordering the coupon to mailing. Another 10 days to arrive at your door via Standard Mail should be expected.

Some additional fear is surrounding the availability of boxes themselves, especially at the last hour. An additional cost to be considered is the purchase of a strong antenna, because digital signals do not necessarily go as far as analog ones.

Deep Background for Dec. 28, 2008-Jan. 3, 2009

Out with the old…in with the new.

No that’s not the new adage for Erie media jobs, since there is no “in” in media employment. But it does mean that this week’s open comment forum will bring us into the new year with your questions, concerns, and conundrums.

As always, I’m available privately via e-mail at joel@nataliemedia.com. Happy New Year as you embrace the chaos!

Dateline: New York City

I’m writing this post from the footprint of News4NewYork, the YES network, and the New York Times. Some random media observations from the NYC metro:

  • Newspapers still rule: NYC continues to be a four newspaper town (plus all of the specialty and suburban papers). As I was sitting on the subway and commuter train many folks had their noses in their newspapers. The Daily News emblazons the fact that they boast 2.6 million readers each day. My brothers-in-law are dependent on their home-delivered papers: one the Newark Star-Ledger and the other the Bergen Record. I don’t know if they are making any money, but the newspaper’s portability and reliability fits the metro lifestyle.

Favorite Christmas song on the radio

Just a quick hit this morning as you continue the wrapping, get ready for the Christmas Eve party or gathering, and church this evening.

What is the Christmas song you always turn up when you here it on the radio? I have several, but right now it has to be “Merry Christmas, Darling” by the Carpenters. Karen Carpenter was a singular talent, and no one has been able to match that recording, although Amy Grant has given it a good run.

What’s your favorite, “always crank it and sing along Christmas song?”

Favorite ‘working on Christmas’ memory

Instead of doing a poll this week, I thought that it would be fun to do a series of open questions and have you tell the stories.

Today, I would love for you to share your favorite memories of working on Christmas Eve or Day. Last year I wrote a post on my Radio Free JoJo blog remembering my Christmas overnight at JET radio.

How about you? Any memories of late night’s in the newsroom when something special happened? A heart-warming or just hilarious moment?

What are your Erie media Christmas memories?
