Poll: how effective is online advertising?

In our reader poll last week, we asked folks to forecast how easily the transition to digital television would go. Two-thirds of our respondents think that it will be a rough road, with half of those betting on a few days of sorting issues out, and the other half guessing that it will be weeks before viewers have a handle on the DTV situation.

This week’s poll springs from the news of several print publications dropping their “ink-on-paper” editions in lieu of a total online presence. However, how effectively will they be able to monetize their content…you know that whole Jeff Zucker “exchange analog dollars for digital pennies” thing I like to quote.

How effective has online advertising been on you?

    TV commercials are legally allowed to blare at a volume higher than you have decided acceptable in your home.
    A mute button is necessary to escape.

    Ads on the Internet, that have the same effect, play out as a strobe light to drive you nutz, push down what you are reading to interfere with your choice, or FONT THEIR WARES at you. These products are natural to avoid purchasing as a result.

    Locally, the Palmiero automobile ad at GoErie homepage qualifies as a nuisance. The very links you require to read GoErie content are obliterated by the slowww-movinggg vehicle from left to right on your screen.

    Once it goes by, if you click your choice at GoErie, the vehicle hits the brakes and comes to a full stop blocking your access AGAIN.

    I bought a Toyota years ago from them in Meadville.
    This GoErie ad would make me drive to Philadelphia for a new purchase before going to Palmiero.

    Advertisers beware!

    Keep your ads out of the way.

    Keep them respectable, not inane, (that’s what TV is for)

    Don’t blink!

    Don’t stobe!
    Just be there. We can find you.

    My favorite ads appear, give you a moment to notice, and then…dissolve away.

    This is a polite “hello”, “wanna talk?”, “goodbye”.
