Bells are rung. Soup cans are collected. Fundraisers are advertised. Food baskets are delivered. Special newspapers sold.
This is the time of year that when we count our blessings here in Erie, we should include the generosity of our media organizations. Over the past few weeks, and in the next weeks to come, Erie’s media comes to help the needy and hurting in our community. The list is impressive (and this is not an exhaustive one):
- WICU food collection for Second Harvest
- Lamar Advertising providing free space to raising funds for Grace Church’s ServErie Thanksgiving food baskets
- Country 98’s radiothon for the Erie City Mission
- WJET radio collecting coats for the needy with Coats of Light
- Times Old Newsies raising money for the Erie Times Needy Fund through their special newspaper on Dec. 5th.
- Personalities from throughout the media ringing the bell and manning the kettles for the Salvation Army.
There are many more small and large activities that go on this time of year where our media lends its support to helping the less fortunate in our community. Because of what they do, we give thanks!

I couldn’t agree more. WSEE, WICU, and WJET all came out to cover the debut of “In the Middle”. Marsha McKinnon of WSEE made an entire array of broadcast support available and Jill McKormick (my facebook friend) made sure we made it on the air that morning live and sent a shooter to the event itself.
I know for them it’s news. But for me, the availability of the local newscasters and their dedications to nonprofits is just another example of how Erie really is about families!
The Erie media is the best in the Country when it comes to saving lives by helping recruit blood donors. They help the Community Blood Bank year round and it makes a big difference. We get a big influx of donors every time we make the news. Last year over 10,000 patients received blood that was donated to the Community Blood Bank and we are so grateful for all the help. You are the best! And when I say best I mean it. In February of 2007 I was a featured speaker at a conference of blood banks in Dallas and I was asked to speak because of the wonderful relationships we enjoy with the local media.
Thank you so much for all your help. Happy Thanksgiving!
