It’s the turkey week edition of Deep Background, our wide-ranging, sometimes snarky, often entertaining discussion of the Erie and national media landscape. Feel free to sing praises, complain, or float a trial balloon, all in a spirit of civility and good cheer. It is the holidays, don’t you know!
If you have something that is really off-the-record and would rather float my way, my email is joel@nataliemedia.com.

While the industry tools up for HDTV, I found the prospect of 3D Football worth noting.
From the news article:
“Next week, a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will be broadcast live in 3-D to theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. It is a preliminary step on what is likely a long road to any regular 3-D broadcasts of football games”

We have the technology for next week (Dec. 08 ) broadcast. First, payola schemes need tweaked.
Has anyone experienced freezing of the picture on digital and HD channels on Time Warner cable (county version)? It only takes 10-15 minutes on a digital channel before the pictures freezes for 12-15 seconds. I have changed my HD DVR 3 times but am still experiencing the problem. The TW help desk suggested unplugging the DVR to make it reboot but that has not helped. This has been occuring for 6-8 months now and it was really painful when it happened during the olympics and we missed a few swimming and track & field finishes! One more thing…when the picture freezes, the only non digital channel that also freezes in WICU.
ANy suggestions?
thanks.
I was deeply saddened to read the front page story in today’s ETN about Norman Shor and his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. I worked with him at K104 in the late 70′s and early 80′s. A real nice guy with an encyclopedic knowledge of music. It was always great chatting with him.
Jim, I echo your sentiment. For those who may not recognize Norman’s name, his air name was Pat O’Day.
Didn’t Norman work at other stations in this market?
All the best to him and his wife during these tough times.
He did work at Jet for a while.
I saw Theresa Murtland reporting on WJET this AM. Is she back again permanantly.
Teresa appears to be on board as Exec. Director for Africa 6000 International, along with other Erie folks such as Joe Prischak and John Bongiorno.
Here’s a link to their website:

Their big dinner gala was held at the Bayfront Convention Center this past Saturday, which is probably why Teresa was on TV this week. I did catch one of the five part series her organization did that JET-TV aired last month on their newscast.
Went and saw the Friction reunion show last night. Great show. They are a great band. Why they never got signed to a label is amazing. They could hold their own against any band that made it big. Really wish they would stay together, play more shows and make more great music. There is a want & need for that music and that band. Friction rocks!
