Christmas Wish List: HDTV choices

We don’t have to just dream about a White Christmas around here, but we are dreaming about purchasing the best HDTV for our living rooms.

A new flat-screen was the most desired gadget purchase for P&T readers when we asked that question a few weeks ago, and I’ve got a few to take a look at.

First, let’s shoot for the moon with what CNET’s editors consider is the best plasma TV out there bar none: the Pioneer PRO111 / PRO-111FD / PRO-111FD Elite KURO 50 HD 1080P Plasma TV.

This 50-inch monster simply has the deepest black levels that CNET has ever seen, vivid and correct color, and plenty of connections for all of your HD sources (don’t bother plugging in a VCR to this bad boy). The picture quality is unmatched in large-screen HDTV’s.

Ok, how much you ask…are you sitting down? $4,499 through Amazon for the PRO-111FD Elite KURO 50 HD 1080P Plasma TV.

Maybe a bit more your speed might be the Samsung PN50A550 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV. Samsung has really put the pedal to the metal for quality HDTV’s for the price. Color reproduction and picture quality are definite selling points along with the price: $1,499 at Amazon.

Really need to keep the bill to three digits? How about a 42 inch solid performer: the Panasonic Viera TH-42PX80U 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV.

Again CNET gushes praise on this entry-level 42″ plasma, with deep blacks and an excellent picture quality for the price. Comes with three HDMI inputs, but is 720p resolution. That’s not a problem at this size of screen, and this size of price: $730 at Amazon.

Something flat for everybody under the tree.

No use going 720p at all anymore in LCD or Plasma. Prices are usually a couple of dollars apart and from a content producer who shoots 1080p, it’s worth the resolution!

BTW…Samsungs can usually be bought for pennies on the dollar and are far and away the best deal in the price and value war!

Don’t forget to pick up a Canon HV30 Vixia to shoot the kiddies with. Shoots full 1080 resolution, has manual override for everything, and shoot 24p, 30p and 60i.

Even you broadcasters can appreciate a palmcam that rivals a $40,000 shoulder cam for under $1000!!
