Editor’s note: Sound off, give a shout out on “Deep Background,” our totally-random open discussion of all things Erie media.
- GoErie scores with Joyce trial posts: it may not be the OJ trial, but the mail fraud and money laundering case against former state Superior Court Judge Michael Joyce has many of the elements of an engaging trial. That plays right to the strengths of the new media, and GoErie.com is staying in the game with periodic posts as the trial unfolds. Erie Times News reporter Lisa Thompson is in Pittsburgh, giving the reader excellent coverage of the testimony in near real time on GoErie and a thorough retelling for the morning paper.
- Why are the polls all over the place?: RealClearPolitics lists 15 national polls of likely voters in the presidential election. The only common denominator is that they all list Barack Obama leading John McCain. That’s where the similarities stop. That Obama lead ranges from a high of 14 points in the Pew Research poll all the way down to a 1 point lead in the Associated Press/GfK and Investors Business Daily/TIPP polls. RealClearPolitics has calculated the average poll result as Obama by 7.5 points. They tried to explain the disparity between the polls by noting how certain polls responses are weighted to match Census figures or by party turnout in recent elections. It sure doesn’t generate much confidence in the polling process!
- Fifty bucks for a family to see the NBA: The Erie Bayhawks are putting single-game tickets up for sale starting tomorrow at 10:00 AM. They’ll be available at the Tullio Arena Box Office, by calling 790-5600 or on ticketmaster.com. The team is offering a screaming deal with their six-game Fast Break Flex Pack, where you can get vouchers for six games (subject to availability) for as low as $75 a pack, translating to $12.50 per game or $50 for a family of four. That deal is available right now by contacting the Bayhawks.
- National media braces for slow economy: Advertising Age reports that America’s top media companies, including NBC Universal, Conde Nast, and Gawker Media are anticipating tough times in early 2009. So to be proactive, they are conducting hiring freezes, layoffs, withholding bonuses, and general cost-cutting. Jeff Zucker of NBC was quoted as calling for budget cuts of 3% across the board, equaling a half-billion dollars in reduced expenses.
- The NFL and MLB on HDTV: I have always loved the World Series as long as I can remember, so don’t fault me if I add the MLB championship HD schedule along with this week’s football matchups. Here’s the whole enchilada with over the air and Time Warner Cable HD channels noted:
