The MSNBC Meltdown

It’s the cable news channel of the network that began with radio pioneer David Sarnoff; once led by news lions with names such as Swayze, Huntley, Brinkley, and Chancellor. It’s a team still reeling from the deep loss of mentor and rudder Tim Russert. And last week, the lid blew off at MSNBC.

What started as blatant boosterism for Barack Obama during the Democratic Primaries has degenerated into open arguing, attacks, and behind-the-scenes chaos. In significant reporting by the non-partisan Politico, high-ranking MSNBC staffers have forecasted an explosion, with the fire coming from disagreement and drama as personalities like Keith Olbermann have attempted to lead the network in the position as the “anti-Fox News.” It seems that Olbermann’s ego is bigger than Invesco Field at Mile High; he reportedly refused to appear on a media dias with NBC standard bearer, Tom Brokaw. In one episode at the DNC, Olbermann dissed political partner Chris Matthews.

You know you’ve got a problem with perceptions when Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell says that Fox News is the most objective network, and that MSNBC “was the official network of the Obama campaign.”

Folks, we aren’t talking about pundits and talking heads here; these guys are supposedly impartial anchors. I really can’t remember a time where the serenity of the anchor desk was violated by such animosity. Wow.

Good night, David…good night, Chet!!

Congratulations. Great site. very needed in our area as well as elsewhere. The media needs a good kick in the pants now and then as a reminder of what their true function in society should be~Honest, factual, unbiased reporting. Thanks for taking the time to do such a good job!

It also spreads to other on air personalities at MSNBC. Last week Joe Scarborough (former Republican Congressman from Florida and host of “Morning Joe”) lost it during an exchange with MSNBC reporter David Shuster. Apparently Shuster referred to Scarborough’s republicans as “your party” to which Scarborough got into a 7 minute diatribe with Shuster in which he questioned what party Shuster was a member of.

After Shuster replied “I am an independent” Scarborough retorted “wonder how many people who work at MSNBC are Independents!”

I’m waiting for an on air fistfight to break out between Matthews and Olbermann! Talk about “Must See TV!”

It should come as no big surprise that in the never-ending quest for higher ratings, our national news outlets have resorted to a “studio wrestling” approach to journalism.
Least we forget where Bill O’Reilly started…as the host of Inside Edition!
I am all for heated debate and exchange of ideas but on the same caliber as the late great Tim Russert or Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts.
Who in the world ever decided that sports guys make good political foder among the intelligencia? Keith Oberman? What’s next? Vince McMann and Triple “H” on the convention floor?
