The Feed for Friday, September 5th

Posted by: joel In: The Feed

Editor’s note: Coming up on Sunday is our first edition of “Deep Background,” our totally-random open discussion of all things Erie media. Embrace the chaos!

  1. Voiceover Master Don LaFontaine dies at 68: ETOnline.com reports that the “King of Voiceovers,” Don LaFontaine died Monday afternoon at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The million-dollar mouth was the most famous movie trailer voice in the world, and is estimated to have voiced hundreds of thousands of radio and TV spots in his career.
  2. WJET announces Mullinax replacement: YourErie.com and Lou Baxter announce the September 15th arrival of Selena Wiles, who will join Sean Lafferty as co-anchor for market-leading JET-TV’s Action News 24. For the past five years, Wiles has been reporter and anchor for WJHL/Johnson City, TN. Wiles is a West Virginia native and is said to be looking forward to being closer to her beloved Mountaineers.
  3. RNC gets cable, lots of it: In order to help monitor the massive amount of media coverage of the Republican National Convention, the RNC contracted with ShadowTV as the Official Broadcast Monitoring Partner. According to the press release:

As the Official Broadcast Monitoring Provider, ShadowTV will provide the convention with digital, continuous access to live and archived broadcast coverage of the 2008 Republican National Convention. ShadowTV’s patent-pending technology will provide the convention with real-time notification when convention-related news is reported by any of the more than 250 television stations ShadowTV monitors across the nation.

    Talk about command and control!

  4. The NFL on HDTV: Jack’s wish was their demand: for the first time ever, the entire National Football League schedule, with exception of the NFL Network games, is available in High Definition TV for Time Warner Cable subscribers. In addition, antenna users can enjoy both WSEE and WFXP in HDTV. Here’s the local schedule with the Erie city and suburban Time Warner HD channel designations:
    • Sunday, 1 PM - Seattle @ Buffalo – WFXP: DT 66.1/City 418/Suburbs 706
    • Sunday, 1 PM – Houston @ Pittsburgh – WSEE: DT 35.1/City 405/Suburbs 709
    • Sunday, 4 PM – Dallas @ Cleveland - WFXP: DT 66.1/City 418/Suburbs 706
    • Sunday, 8:15 PM – Chicago @ Indianapolis – WICU: City 412/Suburbs 712
    • Monday, 7 PM – Minnesota @ Green Bay – ESPN: City 430/ Suburbs 772
    • Monday, 10:15 PM – Denver @ Oakland – ESPN: City 430/ Suburbs 772
  5. Stand Up To Cancer: in a amazingly unique show of solidarity, the three major broadcast networks are joining forces tonight to raise money for cancer research. A who’s who of Hollywood movie stars and recording artists will be featured as the pledges come in. From their Mission Statement:

we are calling on the public to help take matters into our own hands, investing in a revolution that will change the way scientist and clinicians work to understand and treat these diseases.  Stand Up To Cancer is more than a rallying cry.  It is a galvanizing force created to urgently move cancer research forward.

I just hope before he passed away that Mr. LaFontaine did the voiceover for the new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace?”
