Times News shifts into NewsSpeed

Check this morning’s paper for some jet engines attached.

As Erie Times News Managing Editor Pat Howard wrote in his Sunday column, “Daily deadlines won’t wait for high-tech learning curve,” about half of today’s (Tuesday 9/23/2008) paper was created with a new Content Management System, which allows the reporters, photographers, and editors to fully manage the work flow of their stories from words and pictures in their heads to ink and graphics on the pages you read in your PJ’s or on the bus.

Mr. Howard confirmed with The Press and Tower that the new CMS is the NewsSpeed Editorial/Pagination Suite by Digital Technology International out of Utah. According to DTI’s website:

A newspaper’s most valuable assets are information and the ability of writers, editors, and advertisers to tailor that information to suit the needs of its readers. DTI’s NewsSpeed Editorial/Pagination Suite helps you unify your data so this valuable information is not locked into a format that is designed for one purpose–to put news on paper.

Poll: how well informed are you on the financial crisis?

Last week we posed the question whether or not Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott should hire a Communications Director to better manage the public relations priorities of City Hall. A majority of respondents voted yes, he should have someone manage his message better. However, the low amount of those answering the poll speaks volumes about the ambivalence over the issue, and perhaps city policy…which again, speaks to the need for someone to communicate the city’s relevance! Oh well, next question:

This week was an unprecedented one in the financial markets. One investment bank goes bankrupt, another swallowed up, the government takes over Fannie, Freddie and AIG. And the stock market moves 1500 points in both directions. The general media providers leaned heavily on their financial specialists to explain all the complexity. How do you think they did?

On a scale from 1 to 5, how well are you being informed by the coverage of the current financial crisis?

  • 3 - I have a basic knowledge of the situation from the coverage (47%, 9 Votes)
  • 4 - The media has done a good job of keeping me informed on the events (26%, 5 Votes)
  • 5 - The coverage has helped me thoroughly understand this complex situation (16%, 3 Votes)
  • 1 - I'm clueless, the media has been no help (5%, 1 Votes)
  • 2 - What I'm watching and reading just confuses me further (6%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 19

Editor’s note: Sound off, give a shout out on “Deep Background,” our totally-random open discussion of all things Erie media.

  • Kanzius telethon update: The unprecedented multiple channel live broadcast generated a nearly unprecedented generous response. According to WSEE’s Scott Bremner, the Lilly Broadcasting stations WICU, WSEE and the CW raised well over $100,000 Tuesday evening during their Community for Kanzius event. Realizing the critical timing and extreme need for research funds, The Press and Tower has put a permanent link to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation where you can make a donation at any time. Shannon Solo no longer howling at The Wolf

Shannon Solo, widely regarded as the King of All Erie Media, for his multiplicity of talents in radio, television, theatre, music, and film, has been released from the morning show of WTWF (93.9 The Wolf). Melissa, the morning sidekick, is also reportedly gone.

Messages from The Press and Tower with either Solo or officials at Connoisseur Media were not immediately returned.

Wednesday morning drive on The Wolf was filled with liners and jingles, which when you mix with the voice tracked midday show and satellite evening block makes for quite the lackluster jukebox.

With the Fall 2008 ratings period beginning today, and WTWF’s sixth-place showing in the Spring book, Solo’s departure Tuesday fuels speculation of a format change. Could All-Beatles, or All-Christmas be next?

UPDATED: Message from David Calabrese, General Manager, Connoisseur Media, Erie, PA – Sept. 18, 2008 @ 9:30 AM ET:

Connoisseur Media has a commitment to our stations and the community. We strive to consistently improve ourselves in every possible area. We wish Shannon and Melissa the very best in their future endeavors but have decided to head in a different direction.

Starting Monday morning, we will welcome a new personality, Aimee “The Outlaw” Clemson to 93.9 the Wolf. Aimee has a long history in Erie Country radio, having worked for many years at Country 98 in mid days and often AM drive with the late “Uncle” Fred Horton. We are excited about this new direction for the station and hope that it demonstrates our commitment to our product and Country radio in Erie, PA.

Sounds like they’ll keep up the fight for the Country listener in Erie, PA.

Selena Wiles forecast: sunshine

Around the WJHL/Tri Cities newsroom, she was known as “Sunshine.”

Well the team at WJET TV 24 are hoping to catch some rays as Selena Wiles enters the anchor chair at Action News 24 opposite Sean Lafferty. Wiles replaces JET-TV fixture Karla Mullenax who left the station this summer to take a communications position at Gannon University.

According to a station news release, after a nationwide search, News Director Lou Baxter stated, “We’re very happy to have found an experienced anchor that has just the right mix of broadcast journalism expertise, education, passion, chemistry, and charm to continue Action News 24s tradition of trust.”  Baxter added, “Selena Wiles is a welcome addition to Action News 24.” (more…)
